[MINI] CentOS 8 release date

The CentOS project has announced the release date for the next version of the distribution, CentOS 8, to be on September 24th. This comes a few months after the release of RHEL 8 on May 7th and has been highly anticipated by sysadmins and enthusiasts alike.

 

For those who don't know, CentOS is a Linux distribution that aims to be a full source rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux without the Red Hat branding (and without Red Hat's enterprise support, which is expensive and a lot of people and even organizations don't really need it). Aside from generally much newer packages and libraries (CentOS 7 doesn't even have python 3 in the repositories) there have been a few quality of life improvements and some changes under the hood, specifically in package management.

 

Personally I'm excited for the news, I might even upgrade my virtualization server as I had some headaches with older versions of qemu (the only ones supported).

Our whole Linux team (me included) have a meeting with redhat tomorrow. They will come and give a presentation about redhat 8. Answer our questions and listen to our requests.

 

Been only working here for 4 months never thought I would ever sit in a meeting with redhat engineers. ?

Let's hope it's still the nice solid CentOS we are used to because new releases are imo always scary because you never know they did something completely stupid because they want to 'innovate' or whatever.

I'm already using Oracle 8 (based on RHEL8) on one of my servers, one of the major things I noticed is they are going to slowly deprecate python2.7 (they even changed the package names)

Well docker is out and podman is in. Ntp will be replaced with Chrony. Moving to python 3. Optimization of huge pages, support will be split in 2 phases instead of 3, upstream releases,...
