I've used for a while FTP for accessing files on my server when I'm not at home, and it worked fine. The main issues were that I had to download the file to edit it, unlike SMB, and it didn't seem to be very safe. Now that I'm setting up a new home server what should I use for remote file access? Should I keep using FTP, use something like nextcloud or setup a VPN to use SMB?

NextCloud allows remote access to your files. Ideally, you'd still run that over a VPN connection to ensure proper security.

You could do a VPN + SMB also - that's a more straight forward setup. It largely depends on what kind of files you're working with though - in a lot of cases, you'll still end up downloading the whole file to edit.

A remote desktop solution would be best if you want to totally minimize downloads. Edit to clarify: Something like Teamviewer, or RDP over a VPN - never port forward RDP.
