Hi there! (ᵔᴥᵔ)

I've recently moved into a folk high school dormitory. \ (•◡•) /

I would like to have my own local network with my own router under the schools network ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), and wondered if this was possible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The school has one big network with a pretty standard configuration with WPA2 and no login site.

There are no ethernet access in the dorms, only wifi access points in the hallways. (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

Any ideas?

Of course you can have your own private network, you just buying a switch and connect your machines to it and bobs your mothers brother you have your own network...But you probably want internet access on that network and that's where it gets more difficult. The biggest issue is that no one on here knows what the terms of use of your schools network is, it could be that you using their internet connection over your own private network could result in you being thrown out of school completely (it's not unheard of for people to be accused of "hacking" and be thrown out, and a school only needs to be accountable to themselves, not in the eyes of the law so what they say goes!

Find out if you are allowed to do what you want to do first, your education is not worth the risk of someone dumb mistaking your idea for "hacking" and then going all (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ on you.

I have spoken to the headmaster (who also happens to be IT) about this, and he wasn't sure how to do this without IP conflicts.

He basically said "do what you want, just dont crash the network".

Except for drugs, alcohol and crime, they're pretty relaxed when it comes to rules.

As long as I don't damage equipment, I won't get into trouble.

And I definitely won't get thrown out.

As far as I know the router is basically set up the same as a bog standard home router, except for the subnet mask and a slightly more aggressive firewall.

I will inform him before I implement new equipment.

Edit: added the last paragraph

If it's just for your chromecast then I'm pretty sure that you can just set up a router without internet access. But that would make streaming with some devices impossible. There are ways to capture the wireless signal and use this to setup your router. But those are probably not the best solutions.
