The 5700 XT will perform better across the board, but it will heat your house in the winter and sound like a DC-9 spooling up for takeoff. The 5700 won't be as powerful, but also will sound more like a GPU than a Space Shuttle. IMO, if all you're after is 1080p and noise is important to you, I'd go with the 5700. If you're like, "yolo bring on the noise for 1440p," the XT would be my choice. If you choose the 5700, just be aware that you're leaving some performance on the table for the price.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Reference is blower fan I believe.  Better to had 3 fans on the card if your overclocking and what not.

Are you old enough to remember Northwest's DC-9-30s in the mid-90s? $20 says those things could have made it into orbit without breaking a sweat if the pilot was feeling spunky.

Yeah, reference is the blower. IIRC, no 5700 can be overclocked to match the stock performance of a 5700 XT, but if I am horribly mistaken on that I'm very ok with being told so. A 5700 XT reference can reach a pretty solid overclock even with the stock blower, but that thing is going to scream like a grown man being circ--you know, I'll skip that clever analogy.

Yes he can get a OC just all depends on card and HSF.  Personally I would be ok with both blower or regular 3 fan config, especially if price is a issue.  But if it is not get the vendors 5700XT.  If price is issue and you still wanna OC those blower fans do just fine.  No guarantee's but you can overclock either blower and regular video card about the same OC pretty much.  The blower card will just get a bit warmer.
