watch the reviews, if you can, try them in real life. specs aint everything. a screen can be terrible but have good specs. a good keyboard also makes a huge difference

Never buy by brand. Always review the specific model.

What models are you comparing?

I will state something slightly different here. This following is an opinion from a professional (me) with too damn much experience with HP products:

"I wouldn't buy an HP product if you gave me the money to buy it with."

There is a reason HP stands for (pick one, or all)

Has Problems

Hardly Perfect

Horse Pucky

Horrible Performance

Hideous Product

Haphazardly Produced

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

I can say the same about the MSI products I've used. Now what, not buy anything?

Generalising a brand by personal experience or a few products is not a healthy way to help others. Just like MSI, Asus, Dell and etc, HP has great products and shit products.

personal experience

As I mentioned, professional experience. I've dealt with thousands of HP products over the decades and aint one of them worth a damn.

I used to have a stack from floor to ceiling of dead HP laptops at my old job.

MSI ain't no great shakes either but I'd take them any day over an HP laptop.

Again, professional experience with tons of dead MSI laptops and cards. I know my experience isn't going to apply to every new device so I don't bother with it usually.

Then we are in agreement. HP is shit, and MSI sucks too.

So you tell the person this, by professional experience, and suggest a different, better product.

To be honest, without a budget, use case or what models he is looking at, we can't even begin to give recommendations.

Brand loyalty can get you very far though.

Far in what? Wasting money on garbage?

Neither of those. Look at a Legion Y540 or Asus GA502
