So Youtube or GEMA has taken copyright to a whole new level. This weekend the national convention for the Norwegian Pirate Party live stream was blocked for users located in Germany. The reason is that the live stream MAY contain copyrighted material. Seeing that this livestream gives members the ability to vote and participate in political discussions though the internet this quallifies as political censorship. Has it gone to far?

But when is it to far? This is on the border to political censorship

There has to be a point where freedom of speech is taken too far. I don't think this is it but it is almost close. Pirating content is part of the internet and it always will be there is no way of stopping it so you might as well embrace it. But having a live stream that contains copyrighted content will obviously be taken down. I don't think that Google or Germany is trying to take it down because they wanted to hard the party but rather because they where breaking the terms and conditions of YouTube.

The stream was taken down by a mathematical algorithm not a person from either Youtube or GEMA. It contained no copyrighted material what so ever.

Oh then it would probably be a fault with the equazion not GEMA or YouTUbe. Probably just a mistake.

It obviously  is a mistake, but how extreme is the filter if it flags a meeting as copyrighted material? Youtube themselves has made complaints about their own filters, but Google has lost time after time in the German court against GEMA and therefor has to use this filters.

The problem is that YouTueb doesn't want to get sued neither does Google which is why they set the parameters so large and wide ranging. It makes sense for them but it harms others. This is a problem. I guess Google just wants to be extra careful. A disputing system wold be nice so that you could get your lve stream back on air as soona s possible or at aleast it would tell the airer so they could stop their live stream and then renew it once the dispute is over. I am a bit drunk at the moment so please tell me if I am making any sense. This took me a bit to edit. Sorry, I just got back from work and I have 2 days off so i wanted to drink abit.

I have a friend who lives in Germany, and many many things on Youtube are blocked for her.

Yes it's unfortunate that this is happening, and it's hard to say exactly where the blame lays (Youtube for the filter being overly zealous, GEMA or the government for attempting political censorship, etc). However, you can easily get around such restrictions using a VPN or proxy service, such as HotSpot Shield. I've used it before to get around region locked US content, and my friend in Germany uses a free plugin to do similar for content blocked in Germany. (I don't recall if hers is a proxy or a VPN).
