I am looking to buy i vr headset in the near future. I have a i5 7500 16gb of ram and a gtx 1060 6GB.

Is this good enough for a pc vr headset or should i get the oculus quest? My budget isn't super high so i will prob be quest or rift s (or windows mixed reality if those are any good).

What should i get?

Also i saw some people playing steam vr games on the quest. Does this accually work good or not?

Yep

The Oculus Rift S is best value right now,

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

i agree on the rift s .... BUT be warned its power requirement on usb 3.0 is rough. if your mobos 3.0 cant hang you'll have to buy a 3.0 add on card
this is what occulus actually told people to use (both mine and son had to get it cause our 3.0 couldnt handle it)

Well a powered external USB hub should work as well right?

we had 3 different 3.0 externals and it threw a fit on each of them
oh and another thing you have to go into device manager and set the usb to never shut off and always stay powered...

Were they independently powered? Or just daisy chain ports

Is the cable a big concern?

I saw people streaming games to the quest over wifi and it seemed to work pretty good.

Don't know if the quest having 72Hz refresh rate is a big deal or not.

no most of the time you dont notice the cable.....the quest is its own thing a self-contained VR headset .....it has a Snapdragon 835 processor and will not deliver the same performance as a full gaming PC. Oculus Rift library won't be available on the Quest

IMO , until such a time where the displays in the headsets are of a high enough resolution, have a high enough FOV, and the PC hardware available is capable of handling such high resolutions at high enough frame rates.. it is not worth buying an expensive VR kit.

That said i ofc give credit to those people willing to purchase the current VR gear, their purchases fund development of future VR gear that will hopefully eventually become worth while for everyone.

As a Rift S owner, I recommend one! They are exceptionally good if you have a small space to play in, as the Guardian (invisible walls) work very well. The only issue I have encountered so is when the controllers are close to the headset, they will desync. Not the worst thing in the world.

A common complaint is how trash the audio quality is. It's not the worst, it just lacks bass. Recent firmware updates raised the maximum volume limit, thankfully. The Rift S is actually semi modular which means if Oculus ever release a head strap that has better audio, you can just remove it from the visor.

As i said there is software that lets you use your pc to play steam vr and rift games on the quest over wifi.

I gues quality will be worse tho

Does it have a 3.5mm jack? Or can I connect wireless headphones to my pc?
