I'm looking for a $70 gaming headset.

I'll probably be getting it from NCIX.ca

Two that look interesting are:

Logitech 430

Plantronics Gamecon 780

Just don't. Seriously. Headsets are pretty much never worth it and have horrible build quality. Just buy a desktop mic or a cheap zalman mic you can stick to your headphones, and you'll have a much better gaming experience.

BIG NO on the gamecon, had them before and they are the worst piece of tech I've ever owned.

Go for the Logitech's

i have the gamecom 780's and i have to say they're pretty decent.

I'm warning you man, headsets are cheap pieces of crap... unless you are on console where you have no choice but to buy a headset, you are much better off buying a mic and headphones... headsets often have many reliability problems too. You could get 20$ headphones that sound better than 100+ dollar headsets.

I hate this generic answer. Competitive gamers use headsets and they seem to be doing alright for themselves. I have a headset, and gaming sounds great (and the build quality is excellent). You may prefer a modmic solution, others may not. What you determine to be 'not worth it', may be worth it for others. Lots of headsets are generally compatible with console gaming out of the box as well. Recommending a headphone solution is fine, but headsets can work for people as well. /Rant

With that said, I have a Steelseries 9H connected to my PC and my Xbox One through an Astro Mixamp. The sound quality is great, both through the Mixamp and through the included USB soundcard. It's extremely comfortable, has great build quality, and it's available right now on TigerDirect for $118 (normally $160).

While sure headsets might work but they are pretty much all inferior to headphones and dedicated mic which is why we recommend them. We're not going to tell someone to spend the same amount of money on something inferior.

Since this is the audio subforum, we have to take audio quality as the primary objective in purchasing audio equipment. Sorry.

If any given person prefers to convenience of a headset that's absolutely fine. At certain budgets we can sometimes offer a good sounding headset, but as it's not always the case, we have to recommend alternatives. If the OP is still adamant on getting a headset, that's a 100% his choice, but it is not our responsibility to approve that decision. No one's forcing anyone to take our advice, so I really don't understand where all the hate is coming from. Some of the "audiophiles" around here do use sub-par-sounding products for certain use-cases, so it's not like we don't understand the convenience of having the right tool for the job.

I never disagreed with the fact that it is better audio quality, I disagreed with the statement that headsets are 'never worth it' and that they all have 'horrible build quality'. sure, headphones will sound a bit better, but that isn't doing anything for you in-game that a well-reviewed headset won't do for you. sure, a desktop mic will sound better than a boom mic on a headset, but then you don't have a dedicated mute button and it picks up every little noise you make in addition to your voice. and yeah, you could get a mod mic but not everyone wants to manually attach a mic when they could just buy a headset and be done with it.

Like I said, my 9H sounds great for me, is comfortable, has great build quality, and has a noise canceling microphone that sounds comparable to my blue snowball. I prefer the convenience of my headset over a headphone/desk mic mod mic solution. my headset was *worth it* to me, because it does exactly what I need it to do.

i'm all for the recommendation and if OP decides to go with headphones and a modmic, i don't blame him at all. I just don't like when a blanket statement like 'never worth it' is thrown around. just because that person doesnt think its worth it, doesnt mean other people wont find it worth it. /rant

Sure but going on that train of thought might as well get a $20 Microsoft lifechat and be done with it because you don't get all that much for spending more on a gaming headset.

Edit: I know that sounded a bit aggressive but I'm not trying to be.

I don't get why people keep saying: "Get a headphone then mod a mic." then they don't recommend a set of headphones and a mic to mod to it.

Do you need a boom mic? I think at your price range the Pioneer SE-A1000 is the best value. In the US it's $55 or so and a modmic will bring that closer to $90. If you can live without the boom mic, a Zalman clip on is only $10 which is what I use.

Edit: I see that you're in Canada. I do not know the price in Canada but if it's really high try ordering from the US site and pay for shipping/VAT to Canada. On the items that they will ship to Canada, it is usually cheaper.

Edit 2: I found some AKGs on NCIX.ca that seem to be pretty well priced. Does anyone have any experiance with the K142 HD or K511 or K512?
