Im under the impression that as you increase a games resolution the cpu usage should go down, weirdly and ive only noticed this in Fortnite so far, when i run at ultra 1080p locked to 94 fps the cpu hovers around 50 to 60 percent with the gpu at 70 to 80 percent, when i turn the res up to 2140p with the same settings and same fps cap of 94 the gpu usage stays at 80 with some jumps to 90, so far pretty normal, higher res higher gpu use, but the cpu just starts blazing at 85 percent with jumps to 95 percent.

Uhm? Shouldnt the increase in resolution decrease the load on the cpu? What on earth is happening here? I dropped back down to 1080p and sure enough the cpu usage dropped back to 50 to 60.

Not really a 'problem' just interested why this happens when the common belief is it should be doing the opposite aka pegging the gpu at 100 and dropping the cpu load or at the very least staying the same, instead the gpu usage barely goes up much and the cpu gets pegged to damn near 100 across all cores. Ive never seen something this strange before. Could i have discovered a dreaded bottleneck for the ol 6700k?

no.

the machine is quite literally only working harder the more load you apply to it despite that load being targeted at a single component

the cpu still has to feed that component along with the ram and drives

Damn, looks like ill need to upgrade to a ryzen to pull off 90 fps plus at 2140p. Ahh well.

Something important to keep in mind is you may be under the impression that the gpu is what is running the game being that when you put more load on it you take load off the cpu. But no , each component does a specific job and increasing the various settings will put more load on pretty much everything. The functions of the cpu are not substituted by the gpu.

Also , with your cpu essentially maxing out the gpu is more or less waiting on the cpu. So you wont really know if your gpu can handle that resolution even with a cpu upgrade until the upgrade is made. It could be that the gpu also won't be able to handle the setting you're wanting whatever they may be.
