Hi there,

I am looking for a new Workstation PC that I will largely use via remote desktop from my laptop. I already have an Intel and an AMD based configuration picked out, but I would like some advice regarding the components and the choice between the two. Below you can find my answers to the generic questions as well as my two current build ideas. These are copied straight from a website that offers custom configurations. My Budget is very restricted, however I am open to buy a cheaper component now and upgrade in the near future (such as RAM).

1. Budget & Location

Around 1200 €, Based in Europe

2. Aim (in no particular order)

  1. light CAD Design
  2. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation
  3. Data Analytic

I will not play any games and I don't care what the PC will look like at all.

3. Monitors

2 FHD Monitors, one with touch input

4. Peripherals

I will run Windows 10, but already have the license. No other peripherals are required.

5. Why are you upgrading?

First time build rather than upgrade.

What software(s) are you planning on using for CAD and CFD?

What types of models and/or problems are you planning on studying/tackling?

(I am asking because it will have an impact on the hardware.)

To be fair though, I started learning CAD and CFD using one of the whole eMachines laptops (AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1.25 GB of RAM). But the problems that I'm working with/on now, my cluster has 512 GB of RAM and 64-cores. So...if you have an idea of what you're looking to run, it will help.

I will be using mainly the following pieces of Software:

Autodesk Inventor

Autodesk CFD

Ansys Simulation Software

Regarding the GPU, can I leave this out completely and buy a better GPU later on as I will only use the PC for very light tasks within the first few months? Will both CPU work without a dedicated CPU? How much work is it to install a new GPU later on?
