I've had an HP OfficeJet 4500 G510A for some years now and over this last year there's been a slight smudginess to the words. I've tried to clean the area around the cartridges and replace cartridges, but hasn't worked. Short of taking the entire printer apart, the issue might be those pads within the printer the ink passes through. Is it worth it to try and replace them? Couldn't find replacements, so make shift pads would be the option. Don't know if it's worth the effort. 83$ for the same model. The cartridges are the 901's at 23$ for Color+Black.
