9600K open box

Hello, I was recently at Microcenter where they have a 9600k for $140 open box. I was planning on getting the Amd 3600 previously. I am only planning on using the computer for gaming with light productivity. I have seen alot of people recommending the 3600 over the 9600k but at that price, I am tempted to go for the 9600k. Do you think it is worth it to get the 9600k?

Nope.  Much as I love Microcenter their open box items are potentially returns and NOT tested.  Been there, done that.

 

Ask the employees, they'll tell you the same.

 

Wouldn't buy it, just grab the new 3600 and enjoy.

I mean I don't know about the return policy what @jstudrawa mentioned is a bit worrisome.

 

But should it work fine and you have any guarantee on it, the 9600K priced below the 3600 actually makes it a lot more compelling to the point I wouldn't completely ditch it out... you can grab relatively cheap Z370 boards and still get very good clocks from it.

When I bought the motherboard for my 4670K open box on their clearance table/rack.  Had an issue with it a few years later so later when I was in the store shopping, I verified with 2 employees that the open boxes on the clearance table are physically looked at to make sure everything is in the box but retested.

 

If the person returning the item does not expressly state that it doesn't work, they don't test. Remember they have 30 days no questions, so who knows why something was returned.

depends on the return policy if it does not work, but if I could pick up a 9600k for 140 I would buy it even if just to flip it on craigslist or EBay (probably build a godawful rgb covered monstrocity and sell as a whole system at a good markup), with the microcenter return policy bu a mobo, take it home and test, if it works woohoo new PC cheap

Not really. All you are doing is getting a slower CPU for cheaper. Plus you need an expensive Z board to actually be able to properly overcloxk it without running into power or thermal limita. PLUS you need a bigger cooler since the i5 both uses more power and runs hotter. And you also rely on luck as to how much of a lemon you get.

Well I couldn't pass up the value since the added money will definitely help me go up to a 2080 for the gpu. Thank you to everyone that commented. It was an especially nice deal as I was able to get a Asus Z390 Prime mobo for $70 when I purchased it. I'm on my way to test the system right now. my purchase came out to be around $230 which for a Cpu/mobo combo I can't complain about.
