What would you rather get - 3700X/RX 5700 XT or 9700K/2070 Super?

Hey guys,

finally we have some competition on the CPU/GPU front and I've decided to part ways with some parts from my current rig (passing them to a family member, if you're curious). Here's what I'm keeping: Corsair H115i Platinum, Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB 3200Mhz, Corsair RM750x, 3x Corsair ML140 Pro RGB and Samsung 860 EVO 1TB.

The usual question - am I going to do more than just game? Yes, but only a little bit, I'd say it would be a light workstation of sorts?

Anyway, easy part first - for my OS and everything that isn't a game I'm going with Corsair MP510 480GB (same price as Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250GB, roughly 90 USD).

I live in Poland so I'll covert the prices for your convenience, you know from the title what I'm choosing between, so here are the details - 3700X (~415 USD), Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite (~230 USD) and Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC (~530 USD - I know that because one site has pre-ordered them somehow and they're already have the price they're going to sell them for) or 9700K (~450 USD), Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite (~200 USD) and Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Windforce OC (~630 USD). Everything will be overclocked, as high as it will go. You may have noticed that I my rig is basically Gigabyte/Corsair party, never had any problems with their stuff, so they're here to stay.

It's basically 100 USD between those two configs, and I don't really care about that. I would like to know which of those two would you choose based on "futureproofing" or rather, which setup has more life and performance left in it as of today. Maybe I should go with 3700X and 2070 Super? Maybe I should wait for more Navi's and Comet Lake? But then again, Intel is still going with 14nm, and Navi might or might not kill nVidia's current lineup. I'm curious about your thoughts.

Oh, by the way, I have Gigabyte AD27QD, so I'm gaming in 1440p with high frames if possible and I have both FreeSync and GSync support.

Thanks for the replies!

3700x + 5700 XT - if you don’t want / need ray tracing or dlss.

Or if you want it then go with 3700x + 2070s or grab a 3600

^^^ 3700X matches the 9700K on single core (an OCed 9700K might win by like... 3-4%?), beats it in anything multithreaded due to having 8c/16t vs 8c/8t. Stick with that as a CPU, then grab whichever GPU fits your needs, they're both excellent options.

The only real reason to buy the 9900K/9700K/9600K after the release of Zen 2 is if you insist on pushing a good all core OC (Ryzens are better off being left to boost and kept reasonably cool), or have some sort of workload or software that only works on Intel chips.

3700X + 5700XT..

I had a 9700K and 2080 and I like my 3800X and Radeon VII build more.. I also like AMD Radeon settings A LOT more than Nvidias..

I see absolutely no point in buying Intel right now unless you need iGPU or have a specific software that benefits from Intel CPUs..

Yeah, AMD's control panel is much better than Nvidia's, has ReLive (if you select the option when installing the drivers) built in, along with Wattman for overclocking/tweaking, and the ability to check for driver updates. Nvidia's Shadowplay is a lot better than ReLive in my experience, buuuut you need GeForce Experience for that (and to check for updates without manually heading to Nvidia's site), and that requires an account to even use it. Also need a 3rd party OC utility if you wanna mess with the GPU itself (Afterburner is the best option there).

@Zando Bob @ch3w2oy

So we pretty much reached a consensus that 3700X is a much better option here. I'm still not convinced about the GPUs though. I don't mind the "luxury tax" for 2070s, but is RX 5700 XT close enough with it's performance? I want to squeeze every possible FPS from this rig, but I don't want to make a stupid decision, I mostly fear the possibility that AMD realeses something like 5800 XT mid 2020 that beats 2070s and makes 5700 XT obsolete, while still having ridiculously good price/performance ratio.

In some games the 5700XT is 10fps faster, in some games the 2070 Super is 10fps faster, in others they're equal. There's basically no difference unless the game you're playing hates AMD cards or Nvidia ones.

Yea, this matter is quite game title specific. Right now I'm mostly playing modded Skyrim SE and Fallout 4, waiting for Borderlands 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. There's some Forza, Far Cry and Battlefield in the mix. I wish I could know what FPS I'll get in the games yet to release, but then again - don't we all? Same matter with "legacy" titles since there are no benchmarks for old games. Guess I'll save 100 bucks then and get the RX 5700 XT and 3700X.

The question is pretty much solved, but if anyone want's to jump in with their opinion, you're welcome to do so!

People are still having issues with the 5700XT, so it can blow me. AMD better come correct from here on in with whatever GPU they release next.

Mostly crashing, screen going black, etc. They claimed to have fixed it, but a few people are still having issues with it. You buy that at your own risk. I think you'll be just fine with the 5600XT, maybe even the 5700 if you're not going to wait for the new GPUs coming soon. But I'd steer clear of the XT version.
