Intel Core i7 8086k overclocking

Hi all,

 

So I just tried to OC my 8086k. I would probably need some help. I am cooling the CPU with Dark Rock Pro 4 and I tried to go for 4.9GHZ with 1.3 voltage on all cores + XMP on my memory. I stress tested it with Prime95 and the temperatures skyrocketed to 95C +. So I went back to the BIOS and went down a little to 4.8GHZ and 1.285 voltage. During stresstest the CPU hits around 88-93C. 

 

I thought that 8086k should be more than capable of going to 5Ghz with low voltages. Is my cooler bad? Or could it be bad application of thermal paste? What else could be wrong? I am total noob in overclocking.

Could be a bad cooler mount, but most likely not. More than likely its piss poor TIM before the IHS and die. This was a large problem in 8th Gen chips and why intel finally went with Solder for 9th gen.

You should be able to hit 5.2GHz on that chip, others have done so fairly easily what from I have seen.

 

Definitely remount and repaste that Dark Rock for starters.

Yeah. I guess I should try repasting CPU. What would be the best thermal paste for this CPU+Cooler combo?

 

Man I remember how painful it was to mount the cooler. I will have to disassemble my whole PC to get some working space for handling the cooler. I am going to have nightmares again :D 

 

Maybe some day I will go for a delid. But that is too extreme for me now.

Kryonaut is pretty much the king of non-conductive pastes, but it is also rather pricey for what you get. NT-H2 is a pretty good second place to it for a good bit less money, and MX-4 is the cheap king.

 

Though also keep in mind that Prime95 isn't really that good of an indicator since it traditionally hammers your CPU a lot harder than you ever would. AIDA64 or back-to-back Cinebench runs would be a bit more reasonable.
