1. Budget & Location

 

Budget: USD $2300 Max - w/ monitor (x2)

Location: USA

 

 

2. Aim

 

Purpose of computer is for Architecture design, 3d modeling and rendering with some light gaming. Programs used range from Autocad, Sketchup, Rhino, Lumion, 3dmax, revit, other programs that have yet to be determined

 

Current computer was built in 2013 with the following specs

Intel i7-4770k

Asus Z87

Nividia Geforce GTX 960

16gb (x2 - 8gb ) Ballistix Ram

Seagate 4tb

250gb Samsung SSD - 840 series

 

3. Monitors

2 monitors - 1080 - between 27"-32"

 

4. Peripherals

Since my thoughts were to build a full new computer I would need mouse, keyboard, and monitors - haven't thought too much about monitors. Most likely will go with razer for the mouse and keyboard. 

 

5. Why are you upgrading?

Besides having two computers, one for studio and one for home, My current setup runs slow and lags when dealing with large 3d models. Making it difficult to continue working. Current computer will be left one when required to work remotely from a laptop. 

 

I am having difficulty though deciding if this would be the best build for my needs. Looking at the recent cpus from AMD it seems like there is a possible to switch processors though I have heard processing power is lost with compatible amd motherboards.

 

I appreciate any help before I pull the trigger this weekend and buy my components. 

If you have any recommendations on cleaning or speeding up my current set up I would appreciate that as well.

Edit:  The schools requirements. I really didnt want to waste money buying a high end laptop when I could build something better for the same price.

1. Why didnt you include monitors in the part list? PCPP includes them as well

 

2. NZXT M22 is a weak cooler, even among 120mm which is already known as the "small air cooler that looks better" category. 9900k's heat output is also high so if you want NZXT, X62 and X72 are the only options.

 

3. Asus Z390-A's power delivery is too weak for overclocking the 9900k, though I reckon the M22 will fall faster with CPU temperatures triggering thermal throttling before VRM overheating.

 

4. NZXT H500 case is not built for high heat output components as its airflow is subpar.

Reliability is a big problem of Razer. Not saying everything that comes out are faulty, but there's a higher chance compared to other brands like Corsair and Logitech.

No it's not, 3rd gen CPUs run at the same speed on X370 as on X570 as long as their power delivery system holds up, which in many cases isn't since old boards came when the most power hungry CPUs draw less power.

wait... if this is for college, how are you gonna use it outside your room?

 

also, for CAD and stuff you need ram and GPU... that cpu is overkill and expensive.

get ryzen with 32gb ram instead. 

 

hoestly, thoes requirements that the school listed are pretty low. any new laptop with a dedicated gpu will work (can be had for about 800usd). if you really really want a desktop, get ryzen.

Quite overkill for at least the first 2 years of education, some might say 4 years depending on complexity of your work

yea... true...

for the first 2.5 years you will have nothing even close to intensive for CAD etc. you will be fine with even a ryzen3700x for many many years. cad and other work like that doesnt need that much horsepower. 

 

also, @Jurrunio, you do not need x570. what is the point? x470 will work the same.

X470 boards with BIOS flashback dont come in competitive price. Even good X470 boards without it cost like $180, so not even saving much money.

If you're doing rendering and modeing then why don't you go for a Ryzen 7/9?

Plan is to use teamviewer when not at home or school. 

 

From my experience, I feel like laptops are a waste of money because you can build something better for the same price. Those were the basic stats but if I was to build a new computer i was wanting to put more money and make something better than what I currently have. 

 

I believe CAD actually utilizes the CPU rather than the Graphics card.

I'll actually be starting my master's degree here in two weeks with addition of Industrial Design so I will jumping right in with intensive use. My plan was also to build something that I could use professionally once school is over. If i am going to build something I'd rather not waste money on lower end parts.

A 3900X will trounce the i9-9900K in most cpu rendering and other highly threaded tasks. Performance in single and lightly threaded tasks is about the same as the i9-9900K.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

its faster for multi-threaded workstation stuff and its cheaper.

you get better upgrade path.

pcie4 if you get x570 (not that it matters much at all)

@jurrunio that seems like a wicked large cooling fan for the CPU. Does the CPU put off that much heat I'd need to upgrade from stock?

 

@saksham that seems like AMD would be better for my needs then. Thanks for that clarification

About 180w at worst. Not that hot, but Ryzen 3rd gen performance scales with temperature noticeably until 65C, of which it crawls slowly upwards until you reach dry ice overclocking temperatures. This is quite cheap for a big heatsink so I didnt think too much when picking it

@Jurrunio  & @brob Looking online amazon and Best Buy both appear to be sold out.

 

How much of a performance would I loose if I went with a Ryzen 7 3700X? 

 

Do you think the additional cores and threads would provide that much additional benefit to the work I'l be using it for?

The 3900X is a much more powerful cpu. I doubt it would contribute a great deal more than a 3700X for schoolwork, but only because school projects are not generally that demanding. A thesis / project OTH may be more demanding.

From my exp in Solidworks, creating model is single thread work but calculations (fluid motion, stress on material) and rendering (camera flying around showing the model) can push all your threads to max.

 

Imo if you cant get a 3900x, you might as well cut cost to a 1700/1700x/1800x/2700/2700x, whichever's cheapest. After all 3900X's availability problem all stem from the fact that it's a new flagship for AMD and has the highest multicore performance of all consumer CPUs (Threadripper and Skylake-X are HEDT stuff, dont count). Once the 16 core 3950X comes, demand of the 12 core will drop and availability goes up, and you might get good deals on used ones.
