Does removing cables from my monitor make the ports more susceptible to damage? I ask this because I have made a desk for working and just use my normal coffee table on my couch for gaming.

Yes. its mechanical wearing. Everytime something is plugged in or out, there is friction. Also with DVI you have possibility of harming pins when plugging it in. So avoid if possible.

Having ports without cable plugged in doesn't matter.

If ur going to be constantly removing USB cables, consider getting 'small' USB extension cables so that if/when they wear out u can just replace them. Leave the extensions plugged in all the time and just unplug from them instead of the monitor.

Using short extensions will also make reaching ports hidden on the back of something easier to access.
