Sorry, not sure where to post this. So, I have a OnePlus X, can I somehow get Android 9.0 on it? Android 6.1 is really bad.

It's a Custom ROM (Basically a modified version of Android made to work on that phone), it's a somewhat complicated process to install these but not too difficult, there are plenty more ROMs available here. Just pick one with the features you want an usually there is a small tutorial explaining how to install it (though most of the time it requires you to reset your phone before installing)

why no dark mode?

OnePlus is only providing Android 9 updates as far back as the OnePlus 3/3T.

As @FloRolf @Mnky313 mentioned, you could load a custom Android ROM onto your phone, and see how that runs.

Just a heads up...If your OnePlus X 's hardware is not up to par to run Android 9, it won't be a good experience.

Which also means :

BACK-UP YOUR PHONE BEFORE DOING ANY SUCH THING!!!!!

YES, as someone who has a bootloader unlocked, custom rom equipped G6: make backups! (I would recommend TWRP/Orangefox (if available, Orangefox is awesome but it's pretty new, TWRP is on just about everything) AND Titanium Backup for specific apps (also be sure to move the backups off the phone before wiping/flashing (If your phone has an SD Card slot it's a lot easier)

Custom ROMs are usually pretty damn optimized, I had Oreo 8.1 on an Galaxy S5 and that was snappy and a WAY better experience than stock marshmallow. (though some things like installing apps were quite slow)

I have a oneplus 3 and it has android 9 on it, oneplus is really good at keep up with new versions even on their old phones. Did you actually check for updates?

If android 6 is the highest it goes there might be some hardware limitation and you're probably better off sticking with it.

I'd start here: https://www.getdroidtips.com/custom-rom-oneplus-x/

Pretty much assume you might lose everything so try and do as much backups as you can if you want.

Since you are a noob as you said, here's the easiest tutorial.

https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/guide-onyx-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-root-take-efs-backup-more.401713/

Also, since it's a oneplus, I can help you step by step just because how easy the device is to customize. If you want me to guide you, reply and we can talk in PM

Alright. It seems risky, but if I feel up to it, I'll PM you for sure.
