So, when i booted up my pc it my gpu was running at x8, then I rebooted and it was running at x16. and it stayed there for a day. Then when I rebooted once again I am now back at x8 native according to gpu-z,cpu-z,hwinfo and even the bios. I'm pretty convinced that this isn't a problem with the seating of a gpu or anything because if it was why would the gpu be ever running x16? I'm completely lost and yes I did try rebooting again, but now it seems to be stuck at x8. BIOS is up to date, and so are GPU drives. No m.2s are currently installed.

Specs

Rm750x

ASUS b450 i strix

gtx 1070 ti zotac

ryzen 7 2700x

samsung 860 evo 500gb ssd

thermaltake core v1

16gb of 3000mhz g.skill aegis ram

When running the render test in GPU-z I still stay at x8 3.0

Maybe because the contacts are sliding in and out?

It could also just be that the slot or the gpu's connectors are defective or damaged.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I did accidentally touch the contacts and my hands were pretty sweaty. But the contacts shouldnt be sliding in and out because the pc was never moving. In occt i havent seen any errors however(not sure if it would report errors for such a thing though)

Just reseated it, it is once again working at x16

so I'm guessing the contacts were dirty. Maybe take it out and clean it with a dry cloth just to make sure.

Well, if they were dirty then why haven't i experienced it again? I didnt clean them when I reseated the gpu. Could it maybe have been dust or something that was in the slot?

Reseating it might have cleaned it enough.

Wait if reseating it cleaned it should I take it out and clean it? If so whats the best thing to clean it with?

If its functioning as intended, unless set up in a janky way, I would leave it alone and live and let be until an issue arose.

Wouldn't it be safe just to clean it anyway? I need to dust it of anyway. How should I go about it? Coffee filters and 91% isopropyl alcohol ?

No need for alcohol, just rub it gently with a cloth if it looks dirty.

That doesn't sound like it would remove the oils from it, just spread them out

Oils? Why would there be oils? I'm talking dust here

@theboiboi more likely it wasn't seated properly since you seated it properly and it started working.

As a side measure he is saying that yes, you can, but there likely aren't any oils that TRULY (sans microscopic blah blah) is impacting this or the PCIe pins on the GPU.  More likely it was a dust mote causing contact issues if it was a contact issue and not a seating issue.

From my sweaty fingers? I just cleaned it with q tips and 91% isopropyl alcohol anyway how long should I let it sit?

a couple of seconds? Isopropyl dries pretty quickly, so if it stops looking wet then its probably fine toput in, but I don't know why you'd bother in the first place if it was working fine.
