Hey guys, new member here but really want to get some opinions about this question I have. I am a Floatplane member and am very happy with the service.

Recently I noticed Linus talking about how the "Almighty Youtube Algorithm" had changed its behavior of late and it was negatively impacting their channel. I am sorry I can remember the video I saw the conversation on but he mentioned something along the lines of their older videos had seen a drop off in viewers or similar.

It struck  me at the time from what little I know of the algo (being a civilian) that by watching the videos via Floatplane rather than Youtube I was probably having a negative impact from the Algo's perspective. This would be the same for all Floatplane subscribers who I would guess are some of the biggest LMG fans.

Today on the WAN show Linus articulated this thought of mine exactly. He was describing the now defunct Vessel platform and explaining the downside risks of a creator splitting their audience.  They haven't uploaded the archive version of the WAN show yet but the section I am talking about is 13min 38sec to about 15mins.

Linus and Luke were quite negative about the Vessel concept which sounded very similar to the Floatplane concept. My question is why is Floatplane different? What do you think about these risks of splitting the audience and having the people most likley to "hit the bell" be on Floatplane not Youtube?

The reason I ask is I love the guys. love the channels. I really want them all to keep on the trajectory of success they have been on.  This thought has me a little worried.

The difference is that Vessel was taking a cut of every member if I'm remembering it correctly, whereas Floatplane gets all of the money plus a cut out of the subscribers payments of the other content creators that are on Floatplane.

I think if enough people subscribe to floatplane that it starts having a significant negative impact on the YouTube channel, LTT would probably be at a point where floatplane is so successful and profitable that they no longer rely on YouTube.

I haven't watched this week's Wan show though so I'm not aware of what the concerns are.

Even though I have floatplane most LTT videos I watch are on YouTube simply because most YouTube I watch is on my TV through the YouTube app. Floatplane doesn't have an app for smart TVs and the website doesn't work with the TVs built in web browser.

On floatplane, whether you not you watch the video, you're paying the monthly subscription, thus contributing. No algorithm to speak of here.

On youtube, if you don't watch the video, you don't contribute anything. Even less if you use adblock. We could argue that you're having a "negative impact" on the channel by not watching it while being a subscriber... But I don't think that's the case, since a lot of creators have a ton of subscribers, yet barely get 1/10 the views.

Floatplane, unlike Vessel, is a per creator subscription. Vessel was 1 subscription for ALL of them, meaning each creators only got a small portion of the pie if a user watched multiple creators.
