Get your family on Skype/TS.

thats not convenient at all, they're only effective for realtime communications. what if you want to catch up with someone who's onlnie at different time as you, maybe see your aunts wedding photos. or something similiar

Those interested in Socialisation have facebook (well a selective facebook, if you've got 600+ frinds your not really using it to socialise effectively, I've got 47 as that's all i need )
