Hi guys,

I have a Sharkoon M25-W case which comes with 1 blue LED 120mm fan for the back of the case and 2 stock 120mm fans.

I am planning to upgrade the fans to: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Enermax-UCTBRGB12-BP3-UCTBRGB12-RGB-12cm/dp/B078XY4K4V/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Enermax+T.B.+RGB+12cm&qid=1564606071&s=computers&sr=1-1

I am planning to remove the blue LED and put 1 RGB fan in the back and replace the stock in the front with 2 RGB in the front and possible use the 2 stocks and attach it to the top of the case.

The airflow will look something like this:

Have that front top fan as intake. With it as exhaust, you will likely see worse temps as a result of it stealing the fresh air meant for your CPU. Likely wont need the back top fan as well.

YES, and by doing what he recommended you will have positive pressure and less dust in your system

Disregard the two other posters. The setup you had will work just fine. Its very rare for midrange cases to have dust filters at top, so any intake fan there would require you to buy filters.

What cooler you are using? Whether top fans should be intake or exhaust (or imo only exhaust with rear intake if you feel needing more) depends on how CPU cooler is set up.

Not sure if you can call them dust filters, but there this magnetic mesh thing on top of the case.

The CPU is just the standard Wraith Spire cooler that came with the Ryzen 5 2600.

The other 2 posters are correct though.

Having a top exhaust fan in front of the CPU cooler WILL negatively affect temps by sucking part of the fresh air out of the case right away, which means that air can't dissipate any heat from the system.  If there has to be a fan there for aesthetic purposes (like the lighting), it is best to have it as an intake.

As for dust filters, the OP mentions using a Sharkoon M25-W.  A quick image search shows that this case has a large magnetic dust filter on top.

@Kryska

Personally I'd try it without top fans first.  Just the 2 intakes at the front and the one exhaust at the rear.  If you feel that the system is running too hot with that setup, try adding an exhaust fan in the top rear slot and see how much that drops the temps (probably no more than 2-3°C).

YES!

@Kryska therefore do it like this:

WHY?

-Positive Pressure (already explained)

-Top not restricted, so we use this for intake

- CPU gets fresh air and its warm air is directly exhausted

You will just have to get a 3 bucks fan filter for the back fan.

Everyone makes the back fan an outlet but intake makes so much more sense, since this is where fresh air is needed (CPU)

That's ignoring the graphics card (presuming there is one).

eure right, but my thoughts where that the CPU would not heat up the air that much and then the air would get passed on to the GPU.

I ran this configuration for some time, before going water. Worked fine for me, but I had a blower card. Maybe it behaves differently with a non blower one. But I dont think so. Suction form the front fans should be sufficient to pull air over the GPU

The air needs to reach the graphics card fans for efficient cooling. With the top intake and front exhaust, most of the air probably passes over the graphics card without as much reaching the fans.

It's pretty hard to tell what would happen for sure without simulations or smoke tests. What may have worked for your system might not work the same in a different one. For example, the psu shroud in this case worsens the cooling for the graphics card due to higher restriction and  fewer vents for air to come in from. Especially in a case like this, having a direct intake for the graphics card is important.

@WoodenMarker is correct about front intake generally being better for GPU. But I think the pressure overhead from above should be enough. AAND that way you get more air in the sys. Try it and plz report back!

You can see how that goes although that configuration doesn't provide a good path of intake for the graphics card which is generally more sensitive to temps than the cpu.

You should also try the traditional front intake and rear exhaust. Avoid using a top intake near the front since that just removes fresh air from the front before it reaches any components that need cooling.
