Car Audio Trouble

Wolverine7103

Hello, I am sort of new when it comes to car audio. I would like to see if I could find someone to point me in the right directions. I recently upgraded my head unit (Dual XDM16BT 120watt) and 4 Kenwood KFC-1695PS 320W Speakers. When ever I have the radio on, it never gets louder then my phone speaker would, and it is really distorted. Do I need an amplifier for the speakers? or something else? I am new to this and I would like some help, Thank you!

the headunit you got has 4x30w channels, and you are trying to 320W RMS speakers with 30W channels. Yeah you need an AMP.

Not necessarily.

The speakers ( Kenwood KFC-1695PS ) are 75w RMS at 4 ohm , 320w peak (kinda like pmpo, unrealistic number)

As you're unlikely you're gonna play music at maximum volume, you can probably get an amplifier with lower power per channel... for example an amplifier with 4 x 50w real audio watts at 4 ohm would probably be good enough.

The head unit claims 4 x 30w but that's really wishful thinking ... if you go to the datasheet/manual for it, you'll see the following on page 12:

So with an average of 13v on your car battery, with those 4 ohm speakers you're most likely gonna get around 14-15w per speaker out of this head unit ... on speakers that are rated for 75w ... so it's normal you get low volume.

Okay, Thanks so much for the information. I was really confused. My brother has a 75 watt amp, so i'll just use that one. Thanks!
