i7 9700k air cooling

Will the cooler master Hyper 212X air cooler work with an i7-9700k at stock speeds?

Also will it fit in a H500i case?

Cheers

Yes and yes.

Even at stock speeds the 9700K will be a tad warm but shouldn't throttle.

Yep.

I wouldn't recommend overclocking with it however.

Is being a tad warm a bad thing in terms of reliability and longetivity? If I want it to last longer will a better cooler make any difference or not?

Like, is it worth spending a bit more to get a better cooler? If so, do you have any recommendations? I've looked at a couple but to get a noticeable decrease in temperate it seems like I'd have to spend at least twice as much which I'd rather not.

I don't think so, as long as you're below 75C or so I don't think it effects it at all. 85C for years and years on end might effect it, but still I doubt it'd last that long before it died to another cause or was replaced because it doesn't perform up to snuff anymore. You'd need a CPU solidly in the 90s or 100s to be seriously hurting the longevity (there's a reason CPUs shut off at 110C).

Any reason you're looking at the Hyper 212X in particular? There are generally better or cheaper coolers available.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

Bigger is better only for overclocking. 212X is fine for basic cooling, and doesn't have effect on CPUs lifecycle. It's more common to upgrade for performance than because CPU died or otherwise reached end of its life. There are over 10yo CPUs still in active use (mine is just 6yo).

What's your budget? If you plan to OC at any point, then going for better performance is worth it. Otherwise it's better to optimize your spending and get something more bang for buck than 212X.
