is always preferable to rum only one gpu, no matter the usage, because you use less power, dont have to figth with drivers and pc runs cooler

 

dpeneding on the needs the k4200 might be better, you know, some tools ask for certified drivers, the gtx migth not have them

 

i would only take the k4200 path if i could get them really cheap, i mean, dirt cheap, otherwise i would go the gtx route if it didnt offered problems with the cad software you plan to use

Would CAD software even be aware of SLI?

Would they work using both cards in parallel ignoring SLI? 

I doubt it.

 

Looking at specs ...

So the GTX 970 has higher Cuda support, higher clock speeds, 3x the fill rate (which i guess would matter in 2d), higher ram bandwidth, higher floating point, more ROPs (again 2d stuff) , higher caches... so the GTX 970 makes more sense to me.
