16-18-18-36 vs 16-20-20-38: Worth the $10 difference?

Eyeballing two Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16 kits at 3200. One is 16-20-20-38 for $139.99 and the other is 16-18-18-36 for $149.99.

 

What would you do?

If you really want to you can just set the timings manually after you install them.

Well, I realize that. I just worry that you can change whatever setting you want and it won't actually work. LOL

It's not really a huge enough jump in the timings for it to fail, and even if it somehow refuses to work then you can just reset CMOS and use the base timings.

Well, yeah, but that brings me back to the original question... Are the better timings actually worth the $10 difference or is it splitting hairs?

Again, no, because you can still just set the timings on your own if you really need to

My point was: If I get dud sticks that don't let me even go that far with the timings beyond what they've been tested for, is there an actual difference between 16-18-18-36 and 16-20-20-38? 

 

Last time I actually cared about splitting hairs with RAM timings, CAS latencies were down to 2.5 and 2 was amazing, so a CL of 3 was clearly not the performance choice. Timings these days seem large and nebulous to me, so I'm not actually sure of the real-world differences.

But if they happen to not work at those lower timings, he'll be stranded with higher timings.

it's 10 dollars, could you put it somewhere else, or do you want peace of mind that you got the best ram you could find? And what Aimi said is very possible. You could just lower the timings. I'd say it a better chance they'd work than they wouldn't.

Btw, I think I remember someone telling me the 16 matters way more than any others, so since they're the same, I'd think of the sticks the same. COULD BE WRONG, but refer to my last reply.
