Question about Ryzen 3000 compatibility

Hey everyone,

I am planning to switch my Skylake i5 based system to Ryzen 3000, specifically the Ryzen 5 3600.

I've searched for compatible motherboards and decided on the B450 because it is cheap and lets you overclock

 

But I don't know if B450 will be compatible with Ryzen 3000 out of the box without a Bios update,

 

For example, back when Intel released their Kaby Lake CPU's, some people bought a new Z170 mobo instead of Z270 because it was cheaper, but they ran into problems with the Z170 because in order for a Kaby Lake CPU to work on the 100 series chipset they need to manually update the Bios, and you can't update the bios without turning on the board. This caused many people to have to buy a cheap Skylake Pentium/Celeron in order to update the bios on the 100 series board for it to be compatible with Kaby Lake.

 

My question is whether or not it will require a manual bios update, because I don't want to have to buy a cheap 1st/2nd gen ryzen to update bios on B450 in order to use Ryzen 3000.

Yes you will need to update bios but you can buy b450 mobo with bios flashback button so you can update bios without cpu or ram

Well you could buy one from store like Canada computers if your in Canada. When I went there to get motherbaord he said that they updated the bios to latest. Could be ymmv but you could ask them to update it for free.

They wont be. Get a B450 tomahawk and it will let you flash the bios without a CPU.

I've been searching around, and it seems that if you contact AMD they will send you a CPU for you to do the bios update

Is this reliable? or should I just get a more expensive motherboard that lets you flash bios without CPU?

MSI B450 Mainboards are not expensive and most of them have USB Bios Flashback. (Tomahawk)
