Motherboard not turning on, usb has power.

Hello,

A friend gave me his pc because it doesn't work anymore, and i love tinkering with them. My friend described how it died, it was just turned on fine, he went to get a drink, he came back, the pc was off, and wouldn't turn back on.

So I start checking things, everything except the motherboard seems to be working fine. The motherboard in question is the gigabyte ga-z87-hd3.

The thing with the motherboard is that it just doesn't turn on, not with the power button, not when shorting the two pins for the power button with a screwdriver. (yes i tried a different psu, still nothing) The usb ports seem to get some power or something, since the led on a flashdrive flashes when it's in, same goes for the indicator led on the card reader in the pc. I also tried to force the psu on with the paperclip method (or whatever it's called, you know what i mean) while the 24pin was still in the mobo, this made the cpu fan turn on, but nothing apart from that (note that everything is disconnected at this point, only cpu fan, 8pin cpu, 24pin, monitor, keyboard+mouse and a flashdrive are connected/plugged into the mobo). I also took out the cmos battery, but to no avail.

It seems that the mobo is just very dead, but idk if i can try anything else. Any and every suggestion is welcome.

That does infact sound like a dead motherboard

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Try to take the motherboard battery out and put it in again, might be a connectivity failure.

and connection issues with the cmos battery? uhh, that's not how it works, a pc can boot without the battery present.
