Hello folks, I'm putting together my first build and I've got most of the parts together, but now I've come up with an issue of deciding which CPU cooler to buy and I'm having to take space heavily into consideration here.

The issue here is I have a Meshify C for a case, and some G.Skill Trident Z RGBs for memory which have a pretty high profile.
I'd like to get myself a cooler like a Noctua D15 but I am concerned as I read around that it may not fit alongside my memory very comfortably without adjustment, if at all even with adjustment.
Two potential solutions I found to this issue (If it really is an issue) is 1. Get a Noctua D15S and mount a 120MM front fan, as opposed to using the standard D15 with it's 2x140MM fans. Another solution was to scrap the Noctua D15 idea and shoot for a Dark Rock Pro 4, which already has a 120MM front fan and works similarly to the D15, if a little hotter.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience using this combo of Case/Mobo/RAM/Cooler, or if anyone had any idea whether the Noctua D15 would be a good idea or not? Also, if anyone had any experience with the Dark Rock Pro they could provide insight on I'd greatly appreciate it. I see a few builds similar to mine using it. I've heard some worrying things about the cooler "Sagging" and its quality compared to the Noctua, but I'd like another opinion.

Last question is about the case fans: What works better for the meshify C? I was looking at two ML140s, but am willing to go with 3 LL120s if those work better for the intake. Are "Top exhaust" fans necessary? Or just a rear exhaust?

If you wanted to give an opinion on my choice of monitor, too I have yet to order. if you had any general opinions, or tips on this build I'd love to hear them! :)
. Thank you for reading, and any insight you may provide.

Stop whatever you're doing and wait for Zen 2 CPUs. They're coming in just 4 days.

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus TUF Gaming B650-Plus / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID OC/ x2 WD_BLACK NS770 2TBs/ Corsair HX1000i/ NZXT H5 Flow

i have the same mobo & cpu. IMO the 2700x doesn't get that hot & you'd survive with the wraith cooler that comes with it. Otherwise, the dark rock pro is also one of the best coolers on the market, so you shouldn't feel too concerned about using it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the mobo doesn't come with onboard wifi, in case that will be an issue for you

Hey thanks for the input. I was aware about the lack of Wifi and intend to get a wireless card for it at some point soon as well. Any recommendations?
If you know, do you think I'd be better off with two ML140s as my intake fans, or 3 IL120s? Is there really a difference in how it helps the PC?

the strength of the wifi card depends on how far away you are from the router. i think mPCIe cards work the best, but usb dongles keep getting better. Whatever you go with, just make sure it has AC band capability

After receiving a second comment of this sort, I wonder.
1. I just got the CPU, think its worth returning to get the 3000? Do you have a link where I can compare the CPUs, and their prices?

2. Also, will this new generation of CPU work with everything else in my build?

1 There are no benchmarks yet. They will start rolling out in a few days. but if you have the option to return 2700x and get 3000 series instead, yes it will be worth it. Zen 2 CPUs will offer a lot more performance compared to Ryzen 2000 CPUs.

2: You will have to update your motherboard's Bios to accept Ryzen 3000 CPU.

I already have the CPU and am just figuring out my cooler now.

If you can return the CPU I'd return it ASAP and wait. Prices might drop for that CPU after Zen 2 chips come out. Independent benchmarks will be coming soon and you can check to see if you can buy a new CPU that'll beat the 2700x for roughly the same price.

Also if you need wifi why not just buy a board that already has it included like this one.

It's cheaper than your current board and has wifi. If you're going to use the 2700x then I think you should be fine with this since it's not worth it to overclock that one anyway.

Otherwise you could save on mobo and buy this with a separate wifi card and put the savings to a better GPU.

Hey there, definitely looking at returning the CPU and getting another.

Went with the Mobo because I got a good deal on it, should have probably mentioned. I was able to get the ASUS for $140
Thank you for your time and insight!

Due to popular demand I have started the return process for the Ryzen 7 2700X.
Going to go for the Ryzen 7 3700X with its similar price. I know it's probably overkill with the graphics card and other parts I have, but I intend to maybe upgrade that down the line and I think a 3700X would be a good compliment to it.

Will I definitely need to update my X470's BIOS to use the 7 3700X? And is this a difficult process? From what I found on google it looks as simple as getting the update on a flash drive, booting to the BIOS and starting the update.
Do you think amazon will care if I use the 7 2700X to update the BIOS in the meantime? I have until August 2nd to return it

EDIT: Is the necessary BIOS update already out for the mobo? I would like to do this asap if I can :)

If it is going to cost you anything to return the cpu, I would suggest not doing so. There is no doubt the 3xxx cpu will have better performance than the 2xxx, but I doubt the improvement will be AMAZINGLY better. Most probably, and this is a guess, they will have ~12% better performance than 2xxx.

We also don't know if a 5xx chipset will be necessary to extract the best performance from the new cpu.

As for the cooler, did you consider the Dark Rock Pro 4? Performance is roughly equivalent to the NH-D15 and it has clearance for Trident Z modules in all slots.

Well I got the return set up with amazon so I could cancel after Sunday if the benchmarks weren't that overwhelming, worst outcome is I return it and get the same one for a cheaper price. I'm considering how I'd go about updating the Motherboard anyways since I dont have a CPU to do it with, unless I were to use the one I'm returning to Amazon (Unsure if they'd be happy about that). You think the move to the 3700x might just be unnecessary ?

I did consider the DRP4,

Worth noting, you'll need the 2000 series chip to perform the BIOS update, don't return it yet!

And yes, it's very simple to update. Your Google-Fu has served you well.

I don't know how Amazon handles cpu returns. Some merchants will not accept a return if the box seal is broken.

I think expectations of the new cpu are overblown. Not to say that the 3700X will not be better than the 2700X, it will be. The only question is how much better. My expectation that the improvement will not be enough to justify replacing a 2700X.

Todays the day! 3700x is out and I'm ready to purchase if it makes sense.
I know info is limited, and I'm doing my own research but I'm sort of newer to this area so I don't know how to interpret some of what I'm seeing.

Will X470 be able to utilize the 3700X as well as it'll need to make a difference?
Is the change significant enough to merit $30 more bucks spent on the $3700x?
