Labeling Drives for Replacement

Go to solution Solved by Twilliamswsm,

There are a couple of Unraid apps that will do that for you such as disk speed that will tell you which port it is on motherboard/card and disklocation that allows you to record which drive is where. Generally though when I put a new drive in I make a note of its serial number and then a note of where I put it on a piece of paper I keep on the back of a case panel. As for the ports I use some of those small numbers that used to be used for labelling videos to just give each cable a number. 27 drives and haven't had a problem locating them yet.

I am using a Fractal Node 804 for my nas (going to replacing some hardware). How can I label each drive and/or cable, so when I get an alert that a drive has failed I am not guessing which one it is. I'd like to be able to see the drive id/number, turn the nas off, pull the drive cage out and pluck the drive out. Surely there is a way to do that.

Instructions for frustration management:

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.

You can see the serial number of the drive in the software on the nas, so you can know which drive has failed.

So before I attach them to the drive cage I can label them by the number designated by unraid. I would assume this is correct. I know this probably seems like a retarded question. I figure better to ask now that band my head against the wall later.

the serial number is on the drive label already, so no need to mark it.

Thanks, I guess I was over complicating it.

I do know the frustration of not being able to find a drive that clearly isn't working. Last week I spent ages trying to find a drive labelled SDB on the Dashboard the wasn't appearing in the array, cache or unassigned drives. I ended up having to go through disconnecting and then reconnecting each drive in turn. FInally found the answer was that I'm an idiot and Dashboard list of devices included the docking port built into the case, but not the Esata port right next to it strangely enough..
