Looking for a laptop for University (Canada)

Hello all,

Thank you in advance for reading my post and sharing your opinions.

I need to get a nice laptop for university, and my requirements are

  • Good Battery Life ( Upwards of 5 to 6 hours)
  • A good CPU ( Preferably i7)
  • A decent GPU
  • 16 GB of Ram DDR4 2666 MHz + preferably
  • Good build quality
  • A nice keyboard (Backlit)
  • Ability to run
    • Modern Warfare 2,3
    • Black Ops 1, 2
    • League of Legends

I'm thinking about either the

  • Razer Blade 15 ( i7, 2060, 256gb SSD with 2.5" slot)
    • Some known issues
      • Poor Battery life (I could charge so that's not an issue)
      • Bulging Battery (I could replace)
      • Gets hot quickly
  • Dell XPS 15 9570 or 7590 (?)
    • Some known issues
      • Bulging Battery (I could replace)
      • Less powerful GPU (1050 ti or 1650)
      • Need to replace WiFi/Bluetooth Card (Killer WiFi Card Issues)
      • Need to change SSD (Slower Toshiba NVMe m.2 SSD)

I have around a 3.5k budget, and I could add/change some parts if I need to.

Thanks again!

Note taking, coding, and whatever electrical engineering might need.

Consider buying a two in one for digital note taking. I wouldn't have survived without it. Maybe the XPS two in one?

Anyhow, why would you change the SSD? It's an nvme SSD, it's as fast as they come basically.

I would go with the Razer blade 15 and then undervolt it. It take a bit of effort but once you get throttlestop all set up you’ll get about an extra half hour to hour and it will cool it down too.

Where are you from? Preferred max weight in kg/lbs? You probably don't have to spend so much

RB15 and XPS 15 aren't the best choices - many issues

Desktop specs:

Spoiler

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB Gigabyte B550M DS3H mATX

Asrock Challenger Pro OC Radeon RX 6700 XT Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (8Gx2) 3600MHz CL18 Kingston NV2 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

Montech Century 850W Gold Tecware Nexus Air (Black) ATX Mid Tower

How did you use the two in one? Did you write on the screen? I've never heard of that tactic for note taking before.

With a stylus (not the shit rubber ones). It's amazing.

Surface pro 4. It's not an ideal gaming computer, but it's more convenient for stylus work. Most brands have pen support on their higher end models these days.

+1 for the Surface lineup.

Surface Go is a heck of a product for the price and the SurfaceBook is expensive, but has a dedicated GPU and you can pull the screen off and there's your tablet.

My real recommendation is to buy a Surface Pro, build an AMD gaming tower and keep the extra money for beer and a nice display. You may want some budget for some single board computers to muck with if you are doing electrical engineering.

I've read reviews and stats say it half as fast as a Samsung 970 evo NVMe M.2

That's nonsense. Maybe at the best conditions when talking about massive loads. Do you plan on transferring massive files on a regular basis?

It's generally accepted among the community that you don't get any real life benefit from nvme at all compared to a sata SSD, so obviously there's no difference between nvme drives.

I'm not scolding you, I just hate how overly successful Samsung's marketing is.
