2 drives, booting 1 OS... help!!!

Here is the hardware:

1 OCZ vertex 3 240G (Current boot drive)

1 Plextor M9PeY 512G

1 Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

The goal: use the boot partition on the OCZ to run Windows 10 on the Plextor.

The UD5 is not a UEFI bios board and can not boot the Plextor directly. I would like to avoid any complicated 3rd party boot loader that could add complications. Does anyone have a clue how to pull this off?

How about upgrade to the latest tech to support the hardware and features you wish to use?

I spent every cent I saved on acquiring the Plextor, an upgrade would mean motherboard, processor, and memory, not an option with $0 budget.

Not to mention, doing a hardware trick that is very uncommon, or has not yet been done, would be sweet!

Well, if your board has an UEFI you can just go ahead and clone over your OS onto the plextor or reinstall onto it. No need to use both drives.

You spent all your money on something that isn't supported in the hopes someone else could kludge a solution to make it work?

 

Here's the closest I could find to making this work, depending on the revision of your board. I provide no guarantees or support. Further Googling may yield more.

 

Or return it and buy a bigger SATA SSD. 990FX chipset doesn't support PCIe 3.0, so you're already leaving performance on the table. There really isn't all that much advantage to NVMe with older systems.

I did not know UEFI was essential till after it was ordered, and unfortunately my revision is 1.x. I am just hoping my current ssd can be pointed to the Plextor as the OS partition.

It's not a matter of "pointing" to the Plextor partition. The BIOS does not understand that the Plextor is a bootable device (let alone a storage device) and is basically ignoring it. You won't ever be able to boot from it without a hacked BIOS image.
