I currently have a 15 6500 on a z170 msi mobo. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to the 17 9700k and keep my mobo or should I save up more and just do a full new build but keep my GPU and hardrives? If I keep my mobo what features do I actually loose?

The best CPU that fits into that socket is a i7 7700K, which has more per core performance and 4 extra threads (as of right now..).

An i7 9700K or i9 9900K require 300-series motherboard, specifically I would recommend a Z390 boards.

P.S. it's an i5 and i7. Not 15, 17. Might make it easier to Google the product numbers :P

The 9th gen processors are not compatible with Z170/Z270 chipset motherboards.

You would need to change motherboard and CPU (everything else can follow)

Could have swore they were compatible >-< feel dumb now XD thanks.

that is not a smart idea. The chipset that the z170 mobo has is not compatible with the i7 9700k
