CHANGED MoBo's and windows 10 needs to activate

so i changed my motherboard since my original motherboard died on me and now it want's me to activate windows can i reuse the original key from when i first got my pc

BTW this is a custom build

Functionally, absolutely. It isn't Microsoft's intent to screw the consumer in the case of minor hardware failure.

well when i tried to re enter the original code it wont take it

If the code is linked to your microsoft account you use to sign in to your pc, sign back in with your microsoft account and it should activate automatically. 

If this does not work, you can try contacting microsoft and explain to them as to what has happened.

only way I see how to get it reactivated if the 2 things above mentioned don’t work (linked to email address and entering the serial key)

 

otherwise buy a new key for like €10-15

Then the only option is to contact microsoft with the product key and your purchase receipt. Then they will ask you some questions regarding this. Tell them that your old mobo died and you changed out the mobo.

Thats because New Motherboard = New PC in Microsoft's eye's. So if you have lets say an OEM key, they are reading it as you are trying to install it on a different PC. Id call them up and see if they give you mercy. You basically have a 50-50 chance of them saying OK if your using an OEM key. Retail keys are transferable. Though you might have to call them up and have them help with that process.
