I've put mint on many friends PCs, who have all been perfectly capable of using it with no problems

Arch Linux on Samsung 840 EVO 120GB: Startup finished in 1.334s (kernel) + 224ms (userspace) = 1.559s | U mad windoze..?

If this is your first Linux experience I would suggest Ubuntu (I'm in the process of learning it right now :) ) If you have Linux experience look at a list of the most popular distros and pick your favourite.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

Ubuntu, ElementaryOS, or Linux Mint are the standard beginner distros. You could argue Debian but then you have to deal with their crap base.

+1 for ElementaryOS. Convinced a couple of friends to install it on their laptops and they fell in love with it instantly.
