So, I'm trying to spec out a build for friend of mine who's a streamer. She previously only streamed on XBox and this is going to be her first real gaming PC. budget is ~750 british pounds including monitor - actually more like 650 - less is better. The specs below were as low as I was willing to go without compromising streaming/gaming performance.

She mostly plays COD Black Ops 3 & 4. WIFI is a must have cause she has no possibility to connect via ethernet.

I chose the 1660 so that she can make use of Nvidia NVENC to get the best streaming performance possible.

For now I reduced the amount of memory from 16 to 8GB - but kept it at 3000Mhz to not compromize Ryzens CPU Performance with the option to upgrade later. I'm not sure, tho, if that's a good compromise or if should rather go for 16GB of 2400MHZ memory from the start.

Also, would it be okay to get her down to an r5 1600 or even lower like an R3 2200g?

Last, but not least - she already has an Avermedia LGX Live Gamer Extreme. Will that improve performance for streaming so that we could go lower on some of the PC Specs?

Any help to shave off some cash from the current build I came up with or otherwise improve it would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think you've cheaped a little too much, really. The S12II is a very un-good PSU, especially the lower wattage versions. I don't see any places to cut down either than buying used, or using first generation Ryzen parts.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

That build is already on the very edge. No overclocking, btw. So, if the PSU is reliable enough to not blow up the PC, it'll be good enough.

So, here's the latest build to go as low as possible without skimping out on quality components. This setup is meant to do the Encoding on the CPU instead of the GPU as originally planned. Hopefully that RX 580 will be good enough for 1080p60 in most titles:

Honestly most office desktops come with 1080p 60hz monitors included nowadays.

Even in fairly rural areas, you should be able to find people looking to get rid of them for 30ish pounds.

I wouldn't waste 100 in budget toward a 1080p 60hz monitor at this point.

What is stopping this person from utilizing ethernet? It's so much more stable for realtime streaming anyway!

So, important question: Are 8GB RAM enough for streaming or should I definately go up to 16GB of RAM for 1080p60 streams?

The layout of her home from what she told me. She just doesn't have a chance to place a cable from her office to the router location. Not sure if she could work with D-Lan adapters - I live in germany and I have no clue if that stuff works with UK electricity outlets. And if it would work, I'm not sure how well/up to date the electricity is layed out in her building.

Well you stated that you wanted to use the NVidia shadowplay, right?

I'm unsure if that 8GB is going to directly effect the shadowplay. If it effects the gameplay itself, there would be noticeable loss of course..

Really if you can squeeze the 16GB in, it's a good idea.

Here's my thought:

The Ryzen 7 lineup is plenty of CPU. 8c/16t is plenty to operate a normal streaming program while playing a game.

No Shadowplay necessary. That said, the Vega 56 is a significant step up in GPU power from the 1660. (RX 580 8GB < GTX 1660 ~ RX 590 < 1660 Ti < Vega 56 ~ RTX 2060.)

Lose less gaming performance while streaming on the CPU by putting in a beefier GPU.

No reason to sacrifice 8GB RAM. It's plenty cheap out there.

Savings on a B350 Pro 4, since this is firs gen Ryzen, there won't be the chances of BIOS issues.

A 500GB SSD is a nice feature for any computer, but for now a 120GB boot drive is enough for the OS and one large game. The 2TB HDD will provide cushion for any recording files and programs she needs for the stream. (And... Anything else.)

Solid Case (grab a 120mm cheapo fan for front intake. Sorry, forgot that.) And a decent enough PSU for the job.

I included a cheapo wifi adapter. If there are specific needs to UK protocols, do a little digging before buying anything. If it were me, I'd literally run a 100ft Ethernet along the corners of my walls to hard wire this thing in, but to each their own.

As I stated above, 1080p 60hz monitors are a dime a dozen. You could probably find one free if a university is letting out. I see tons of US listings for ~$30. Find one that works and use it until she's ready to make a real monitor upgrade. (144hz, 1440p etc in the future.) I just placed the cheapest one in the build to show even a 70 pound spend can fit this solid GPU.

Breakdown:

  • Don't overspend on an SSD too small to hold all her files anyway. She can grab one later on a good sale.
  • Don't overspend on a monitor that is inherently shitty. Just grab something used that works.
  • Solid CPU/GPU > Mediocre GPU for Shadowplay streaming.
  • DON'T GET A SUPER CHEAPO PSU! EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT OVERCLOCKING!
  • Don't overspend on a wifi board. They are pricey! Grab a dongle!

(lol now reading back, this is almost exactly @GoldenLag's build...)

Okay, you convinced me about the PSU - I will change it. However, I'm not super stoked on that motherboard. I want to make sure she has a 100% stable and hassle free experience and putting an R7 into a C-Tier mainboard together with 3000Mhz Memory sounds like calling for trouble to me. Do you guys have personal experiences with this setup?

The Pro 4 has solid VRMs for power delivery. You certainly can upgrade, but this one is solid enough.
