I'm not sure if I'm over-thinking this or what, but i'm unsure if it's better off being safe than sorry

My power supply has been screwed up for about 2 months now, but I haven't had the time to RMA it, so I'm thinking of just buying a replacement, RMA'ing the broken one, then selling the RMA psu.

Right now I have a corsair hx1050, and under load the fan has a terrible rattling noise, it just started doing this about 2 months ago, but I haven't had enough free time where I don't need my PC and can send it in.

I'm unsure if it's the fan, or if something in the actual PSU is rattling, but it sounds horrible :(. It's also JET ENGINE LOUD compared to the rest of the system, and a bunch of people told me it shouldn't be nearly that loud, so I'm wondering if the fan has some issues.

I'm debating on getting a 1000watt seasonic platinum to replace it, since seasonic is about as good as it gets, and I liked the fact it has that "dual fan mode" switch on the back. But I'm worried about if 1k watts is enough, I may be flashing my 780's bios to unlocked voltage, and have read they can suck as much as 400+ watts so I'm unsure if I should get a 1250 gold seasonic instead?

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2341641

I've seen this topic aswell, which makes me ponder getting a 1250: http://www.overclock.net/t/1425102/updated-ab-b18-team-skyn3ts-unlocked-ncp4206-voltage-llc-mod-tool/120#post_20778292

The way I see it is if I do that, and OC the cards + my cpu to 5ghz, and 1300-1400 mhz per card, I'm looking at.. 350-400 watts per card, and ~250-300 for the CPU, then my 8 sycthe GT's+ the pump would be ~80 watts? I'm not sure how many watts a HDD+ Ssd+ram takes, but without those that's already ~1000-1200 watts.  I'm still trying to find a solid number for the 3930k's tdp at 5ghz, I seem to be seeing everyone on forums saying it's around 300, but I'm not sure.

Obviously I won't be using that 24/7, but if I'm ever bored and what something to do, then it's there.  Or if in a couple years I don't have money to upgrade, I can still make 100% sure I can play the newest games. (Unless all next gen games are the epitome of crysis  when it was released)

If you're just doing 780 SLI and a 3930 a 1k PSU should be plenty.

I don't know how a card can draw 400w, it would struggle to cool itself. You're probably seeing total system benchmarks.

When you're talking about 275 watts with just the 1.2v voltage lock (110% tdp), then removing that lock and using 1.3-1.4v per card, with over 125% tdp, it's a lot.

With 106% tdp slider, and the +38mv they use 110 % tdp, so I'm assuming 1.3-1.4v + the 125% tdp they'll be using close to 130%+ tdp, which is like 350 watts

Look at the links I provided, it explains everything I was talking about, titans using over 450 watts

My cards are both watercooled with full waterblocks, and 2 480mm 60mm thick rads, temps aren't an issue

Get the 1250w then if you're going to push them that hard, especially with that power grubbing chip you have.

sorry if I came off harsh, I didn't mean to, I didn't know how else to explain.  I wish the 1250 wasnt so much more than the 1k :(

Does anyone know if you can use corsair link to control the ax1200i's fan curve? edit: nvm you can, I may get one of those but it's so expensive >.<

I wouldn't go after a Seasonic tbh, coil whine when the system is off >.<. Overall they're never fully quiet when the fan is turned off; theyre nothing more than a whinefest classified psu.

Just get a evga supernova 1000 P2 comes with the on & off fan switch in the back of the psu instead and has overall better ripple suppression & efficiency. The coils are better secured than we find on Seasonic units.

Look here under the block where EVGA is printed, just amazingly glued & dampened.

in_APFC_caps3.jpg

The manufacturer is Superflower not FSP like their other power supplies.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have this power supply :P After going through various of PSU's like HX850>AX860i>AX860>860xp2 I gave this power supply a shot and suprisingly it does have 0,000 coil whine even when I'm putting my ear to it.

The fan starts to kick in at 700W load in my TJ11, aslong as the psu is below 45° the fan won't spin. 1250W is a bit of a waste for your system, there's probably only 1 game atm that will push a 3930K to 50% that's BF4 and I doubt you'll max the gpu's out but most of the time you can't :P

Your 780's bios seems to be locked at 265W (http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/141919/evga-gtx780-3072-130531-2.html) so they will consume 500W in worst case scenario's like mining/furmark, leaving you 500W over which is plenty for a 3930K@5GHz

@Faa did you not read the part where I talk about flashing the bios...?

People are hitting 400+ watts with 780's and titans with these unlocked bios, hence the wanting 1250 watt PSU.   As I said before, I won't be just playing games when I overclock that far, I'll be doing benchmarks to see how far they can possibly go.

I posted a link to someone with a kilawatt plugged in with a 1200 watt PSU, 5ghz 3930k+ 2 titans with unlocked bios, in firestrike he hit the over-current protection and shut his system down.

Power efficiency goes out the window on these once you start pushing more voltage, same with my 3930k at 4.5+

Get the EVGA supernova 1300 G2 then, its superflower as well and it's only 190$ -> http://www.superbiiz.com/query.php?s=evga+supernova+1300+G2

It's gold rated but scores platinum ratings :P Efficiency/ripple suppression & voltage regulation theyre better than seasonic (compare at uk.hardware.info)
