My router is a very basic model with only 4 ethernet ports, one of which is for the network coming into the house, one is is use by my PC, port 3 is used by wifi extenders through out the house and I have to switch the last port between my NAS and my xbox/laptop.

I need to get a basic networking switch but I have no idea what to look for in a switch.

And recommendations would be very helpful.

What are these for?

Or similar, then just hook up a cable from your router to it, and job done, plug anything in you want. You can get a 5 port switch if you like to save some money, but with an 8 port switch at least it allows for a fair bit of expansion for other devices, more switches, access points etc if you need them.
