New Build for my 76 year old dad

I love my old man he got me into computers back in the Tandy days Prodigy, AOL, DOS and Win 3.  He is technically very sound and can build a computer no problem.  Thankfully he is in good health and he does a lot on the PC.  He uses Quicken since the 80's going online banking etc.  He does everything imaginable on the PC.  He uses all Adobe apps including Premiere and Photoshop.  He does Photo Editing and Organizing and makes DVDs and has ton of pics.  He has had his current PC since 2011 Sandy Bridge 2600k with 16GB RAM and SSD.  However the computer was pre built and had Windows 7 which then we upgraded to Win 10.  His system is soo slow.  Like opening up my computer takes a couple seconds.  Opening a browser takes 5 seconds.  Over the years he has installed soo much stuff like 140 things in add remove programs and plus the upgrade made for a tangled OS.  He wants Intel for sure and a 500GB m.2.  He is going to keep his old computer to put on the side so there's no stress and he knows what to install and what not.  So on top of that he will need a new case and PSU non RGB.  His budget is 800 dollars and even close to 1000 dollars.  I told him about the 9900k but he didn't seem to jazzed about it.  However if it can fit in the 1k then that would be ideal.  So LTT gurus help with my old mans build.  Thank you all so much and God Bless!

This makes sense for Adobe products, but new Ryzen is so soon, it's worth waiting to see how it changes the productivity landscape. Possibility of 16 cores with SMT? Serious business.

Otherwise:

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

You rock fasauceome.  I will tell him if he can wait 2 months for Zen 2 and for the picture to look clearer.  Other then that this build you made looks perfect for him.

970 evo, RGB cooler? I think you can shave off some of the fanciness here and there for more performance, a 500GB SATA SSD opens up a lot more spending and the non RGB 212 black saves a cool $5

Ah I didn't see the RGB on the 212. The 970 evo is excellent. His dad wanted the M.2 drive tho? I changed the mobo on the other parts list posted

I usually recommend an M.2 SATA SSD unless I see that there's a use case that specifically need NVMe speeds (but 2/5" drives aren't that far off then so the recommendation for those is still valid)

@Turtle Rig Is video editing with huge files in the projected workload? If not, classic normie SSDs will do.

The F suffix indicates a cpu without integrated gpu. The motherboard needs BIOS P3.10 to use the cpu. It should not be an issue, but must be checked before purchase.

The Noctua cpu cooler isn't strictly necessary.

Edited because I'm still getting used to the new pcpartpicker layout.

It isn't incapable of handling SOME OC'ing just not a lot. Besides he can spend an extra $40 to get the MSI Z370 board. That is what the budget called for.

You literally can't OC on that board, it's locked.

Get a Z390 UD at the very minimum for OC...

Thanks for the response.  Ya his system is bad,, My Computer takes couple seconds to come up.  browser takes 5 seconds and everything else is slow.  He has SSD and OS and apps on it.  The problem is when he got the system it was Winblows 7,  Then we upgraded him and put image from hard drive to SSD.  Plus he has soo much stuff installed.  The OS shouldn't behave like this.  A clean format would do the trick thinwalrus my friend but he, or I talked him into getting a new system since his is 2011 Sandy...  :)

I was just making a point that the parts are not so bad that you should see a big difference on basic stuff.

For that light use case a nuc could be nice. Its about 400$ with the 4c8t i5 you see in mid tier Macbook Pros. So with 16gb memory and 1tb ssd should be about 600-700$ in a nice tiny package. Imo the new Nucs are the best product from Intel in years.

If he could be talked into AMD, the Ryzen 5 series are such a good value. I opted for a newer 2600X and paired it with some gear that will let you hit a decent overclock on it for fun! The 590 is at a great price point and offers 1080p Ultra or 1440p gaming currently. Hard to argue the value!

Since he wants no RGB, I opted for a no-nonsense, all black build! (The GPU does have some tiny red detailing on it, but it's minimal.) I don't even think there's an LED on this thing...
