Best cooling for a Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550

Turtle Rig

Like the title says what is the quietest fan that will work with a Core 2 Quad CPU.  The key is quiet but handle a overclock.

or a 212 black (rgb/normal), 33 esports, 34 esports, or many more

but that isn't needed here

meh, the 212 is ok, the 33 & 34 esports don't have LGA775 IIRC.

the Q9550 can get kinda hot.

He is going to try to overclock for the first time.  I have my old hyper 212 I just realized lol so I will give him that.  But question will it fit on his 775 socket ?

Yes, but it's even more of a pain than usual to install on 775. If you want period authenticity, serious badass points and the most painful cooler installation process ever, check this bad boy out:

Oh lawhd no.  I still have my thermalright true 120, and it's painful enough.  Don't need to go to the only cooler with worse 775 mounting than it lol

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

It's not that it's particularly bad to mount on 775. It's that it's particularly bad to mount on anything. The mounts on the backplate don't reach the bolts on the cooler, so you have to push down without toppling the thing or sliding it off your socket, then you have to tighten it with this weird ball wrench stick that's more of a screw stripper than an actual tightening mechanism. Oh, and all this time you're slicing your knuckles to ribbons on the razor sharp cooling fins. But damn, is it sexy when it's mounted (that's what she said), and it does a really nice job of keeping things comfortable on moderate to heavy overclocks.

I agree with @LukeSavenije, however something more performance oriented would be this

I don't. A 212 is fine.

When I was younger I had an Optiplex 755 with a Q9550, overclocked it to 3.4Ghz via PLL, on stock voltage with the standard fin stack cooler. Never went above 65c, even during h.264 encoding. A 212 would probably be overkill with that chip.

My buddy has the same exact CPU (like, my personal chip) in a system I build for him with a newer Intel DX48BT2 board and he's at 3.8GHz at 1.35v. He's got that weird looking Zalman CNPS9900a.

I remember the cooler being decent, but kinda noisy. Some people may not mind, others demand silence. The Gammax 400 is comparable to the 212, but the one I linked would be even quieter, for people who need a bit more performance, at a given noise level.

I have a Q8400 sitting in an EVGA 680i SLI motherboard with no RAM. Once I get some nice DDR2 I'm gonna slap an AIO on it and overclock the snot out of it and see if I can beat an i5 2500.

Although they are old as balls, the Core 2 series of CPU are still good.

Hey Turtle, buy this. You'll be impressed. Here's the build I made for my buddy with the Q9550
