I have a few old parts lying around and I decided to build a pc. It's an lga 775 system with a core 2 quad q9650, msi p7n sli platinum, 4gb ddr2 800 mhz, a generic 512gb hdd and a corsair cx500 watts psu. The only component missing was the graphics card.

So I went online and searched for a gpu of that era. I found a gtx 580 for 25 euros and In its description the guy selling it said that it was artifacting when he stopped using it about 3 years ago.

I was able to negotiate with him since he couldn't confirm that it was even working, and got it for 5 euros.

Got home and started the cleaning process. When I opened it and removed the shroud I saw a thermal pad on top of the gpu... And I was like... WTF!? The worst part is that it wasn't even covering the whole gpu... The thermal pads on the vram were also crumbling a part.

I have never seen thermal pads on gpus, maybe it was normal back in 2010? I don't know...

So I put new thermal pads on the vram and thermal paste on the gpu and now it is working. No artifacts.

Yes it can run Crysis!!

Ah, that.

Seems like previous owner replaced thermal paste with thermal pads.

the only similar thing i have seen was that there was a thermal pad used on an old laptop with an AMD K6 chip, that was pretty strange

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)
