Lenovo Y740 Worth it?

Hi all, I am going to be an electrical / computer engineering major at a local Nebraskan university. I have owned a midrange pc in the past (i5-6400, 8gb ram, rx480) and sold that to a friend. Currently, I have a Xeon E5 something series with 32gigs ram and an rx 480. This computer does not complete any tasks of mine at all no matter how hard I try. My father gets Lenovo Thinkpad series laptops from work all the time, and since he's head IT, I get the old ones to use as laptops. They have always been some of the nicest laptops I've ever used and the keyboard really is that good. I'm currently using a used T430 with a i5-3320m, 8gb RAM, and the iGPU.

The 6c12t CPU on the Y740, paired with 16 gigs of RAM and a RTX 2070 (minimum I'll pick due to the 2060 having only 6gig VRAM)  on a 17" 144hz GSYNC all for (USD)$1.5K seems like a good deal and is way better than anything I've had. It would have to suffer through CAD, 4k60fps video editing, rendering, and gaming. Is this a good pick in your opinion? Only 5-6hrs of battery life, but that's fine for my use. I'd rather not get both a laptop and a desktop, and I'd probably travel over to my friend's dorm quite often for gaming.

Considering I rock an iPhone SE with thumb-wide bezels and a case I don't see it as an issue ?. Thinness means a premium and reduced performance. I've heard that the Y740 has good thermals.

1.6k max. No preference on weight or battery life. I was more asking opinions of the Y470.

Y740 (not Y470) is a good model, however there are other options to be considered as well

If you prefer 2070MQ due to more VRAM (2070 laptop is out of your budget):

Eluktronics Mech-15 G2 / CyberpowerPC Tracer III 15R Slim VR 300 (TongFang GK5CQ7Z)

Clevo P950EF

HP Omen 15t customize

Or 1070 laptop:

HP Omen 17t customize

MSI GE73 / GP63
