I haven't watched the video myself, but Mark Rober is a very smart man, so the video should be atleast a bit helpful:

I could use some advice on my egg drop assignment. Smart people of the LTT forum, this is your calling. Any ideas help, just looking for some inspiration.

This is the restrictions:

 

Yarn (½ cup)

Straws (5)

Fabric (9” x 9”)

Paper (9” x 9”)

Popsicle sticks (5)

Masking tape (1 m)

Cups (5)

 

The egg contraption will be dropped from 2 meters (6ish feet). I get 20% extra credit if it doesn’t crack....so...welll...my science grade needs it. The egg also needs to be very easily removable and transferable. Thanks a lot!

I used one of his designs when I had to do an egg drop.

 

I did in fact get first place with it, so can confirm, design does work.

EDIT: We were also dropping our eggs from a good 8-10 feet.

Take the cups and surround the egg with them but make a hinge out of fabric and tape so you can easily remove it. Then make 2 holes in each cup and crush them. Uncrush them and use the straws as a buffer between the cup edge and the egg. Next place the fabric between the egg and the cups and straw. You could use the Popsicles as weight so it falls a certain way or make skis on each cup for a larger surface area

When my class (I think... 8th grade?) did the egg drop, we were allowed only two materials: Toothpicks and glue.

 

I ended up building a tetrahedral carrier for the egg with two mechanisms to protect it from the fall:

-The legs of the carrier were strategically bent in a way that made them springy.

-There were three large wings arranged like rotors on the top that I made by building a thin frame out of toothpicks, laying it flat on a wax sheet, then filling the interior with a layer of glue and letting it dry. They were supposed to act as a form of parachute.

 

What I learned from that: Weight is important. I made the wings too thick and put far too much reinforcing in the carrier, so it ended up hitting the ground too hard.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.
