Hi all,

I currently use a BT home hub 5 which hasn't had a firmware update since 2018, and despite BT assuring me it will automatically update, it has not, so I'm looking to get a new router. I'm looking to get a VDSL/ADSL router & modem combination  and was wodnering if people had any recommendations of what to upgrade to? I've been looking at the Smart Hub (1) or the TP-LINK AC1600 but I'm new to this stuff so would appreciate some advice

It probably doesn't need a firmware update because they don't update that often. I have DSL as well and just use the router/modem that came with our house and service provider AT&T, and have another router connected to that which everyone connects to wirelessly because the crappy motorola router that at&t gave us craps out every few hours with all our devices on it. You also gotta watch out when looking for a router with DSL support and make sure it works with your provider. The ac1600 is probably fine for you. It doesn't really matter which one you get if it has the features you want and supports your provider.

Here is the deal even 3rd party routers not from ISP's dont really get that many updates normally. I mean my Synology Router gets updates alot, but I think they use a similar system on their NAS's as well which might be why they get updates so often. Secondly, modems and Gateways (Modem/Routers) get their updates directly from the ISP. Meaning once the vendor has an update, ISP's will do some validation process and send it down to the customer. The issue here is you only get the update if the ISP feels you need it. Also, some ISP's for example Charter here in the US, will not provide any updates to customer own equipment. So thats something to think about.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
