Simple question. Can a 3 pin case fan work in a 4 pin on a Asus Maximus Formula VII.

Yes.

The difference is that a 3-pin fan can only be controlled with voltage.

A 4-pin one is controlled by PWM. If you want to know how that works i can provide some info.

 

But short answer: yes it will work.

Yes, you can connect a 3-pin fan onto either a 3-pin or 4-pin connector. The notch in the connector will make it so you can't get it wrong.

Ok thank you everyone. Im getting 5 new 140mm fans for my case and didn't know because the mobo has 4 pins and the fans i want are 3 pins.

sounds good. you will want to make sure that the headers are set to DC instead of PWM, otherwise they will run at full speed all the time.
