i have a 1TB HDD i formatted it to be a storage disk, can i change it within windows to be partition even though it has files on it?

You can resize the partition if it has files on it. What are you trying to do?

i formatted it and just left it like a usb thumb drive for storage and i have few important things on it and wanted to know if it was safe and it would not corrupt my file before doing it. And yes exactly

So you can make the partition with the data smaller and leave the rest unallocated and when you install a OS on it it'll automatically partition the unallocated space into partitions it needs. Then if you want to install another OS alongside it, shrink the partition the 1st OS made and let the 2nd OS your installing partition the unallocated space.

Yes you just need to shrink the partition that has your files on it. Unless the drive is almost full or isn't very big. You usually need 15 or more GB for windows and maybe 10 for Linux, depending on your distro.
