upgrading gpu

hi,

i am wandering what gpu my system can suppert psu wise, my system now is 

corsair rm550W 80+gold

intel i7 7700(not k)

gygabyte z270 hd3p

gtx 1070 g1

recently i was thinking maybe to by an rtx card and i want to know just how much i can go with this psu (playing normally 1440p ) and even if this upgrade is worth the money for value. my pc is about +-3 years old

You can move up to a 2080 or 1080Ti if you want.  Those would be great 1440p cards.  

 

Anything else, I'd leave alone.  The 1070 is a good card with your setup really.

 

Are you unhappy with the frame rates you're getting?

I would go for the rtx 2070 as it is faster than your card and beats 1080s in quite a few games

I would get a 2080, anything less than that is just marginal.

the question is if my psu can support 2080 its a big difference from the 1070

It's a marginal upgrade over the 1070. Not worth the cost imo.

well on newegg 2070s are about the same if not cheaper in price than 1070ti s

1080 Ti used is good value as the 2080 RTX is only just powerful enough to utilize the new technology at 1440p, that'll likely change as games/drivers get more efficient.

 

The issue is that the market has an excess of 1060/1070 and a high demand for 1080/1080 Ti and better graphics cards, so even if you got a "good" price in the current market for the 1070 the cost to upgrade to a 1080 isn't worth it in terms of the net performance difference so you'd really have to stretch for a 1080 Ti+ to feel the difference.

 

So if you see yourself keeping the card for 2+ years then get a 2080, if you want a stop gap for the next gen a 1080 Ti used is a good buy.

Right, but neither one is a good upgrade over a 1070.  The benefit is too small to justify spending that much and then trying to sell the 1070.

 

Btw OP... how much RAM and SSD space do you have?  May put your money to good use in other areas.
