DELL G7 7588 POWER THROTTLING AND THERMAL THROTTLING

okay so i have a question regarding my laptop, its a dell g7 7588 every time I'm running a game I'm power throttling and thermal throttling occasionally it impacts performance. Does anyone here know how i can fix this issue. I have tried under-volting my cpu, using ITU, Throttlestop, under-volting my gpu, using HWINFO to manually increase my fan speed. I honestly dont know what to do and if anyone here can help me that would be great

replace the thermal paste on it if you've had the laptop for a while, or do it anyway as a lot of companies suck with their application to the CPU and GPU and a lot use poor quality TIM.

How much are you undervolting the CPU by?

Also, what kind of storage drives to you have?  I'm asking because HDD's are heat monsters, so they could be part of the cause.

I don't think you understand how f**king difficult (or tedious) it is to repaste the Dell G7 laptops.  They over-engineered the whole thing on purpose, so there is a LOT more to take out in order to do that.

at the moment i have tried undervolting by -50 -75 -100 -125 -150 every time i run a stress test on any of those i still experience thermal throttling or power limit throttling

Try undervolting by -200 and then undervolting the Intel integrated graphics by -80.  I've done that with the Dell G7 7588 I'm currently using to communicate with you.  It experiences no thermal throttling OR power throttling.

For my wife's HP laptop I literally had to disconnect everything (including the lid as the screws in the hinges also anchored into the motherboard), remove the motherboard and flip it over to replace it...can't be much more difficult than that ?‍♂️

alright so i slowly decreased the offset voltage to -200 and it crashed the farthest i got was to -175 and thats where im at right now on the cpu as for the gpu do i use msi afterburner and decrease the core clock?

There are, like, three lids on the Dell G7: the outer chassis lid, the internal motherboard shield (basically a lid), and a shield for the heat pipes (& fans???).

Oh, and there's another shield separating the mobo from the keyboard.  Shouldn't need to screw with that, but still.  Dell G7's are built like tanks!

I guess it isn't difficult, but it's at least too much for me to trust myself with.  As long as my undervolt works, I'm happy.

I find that the best practice is to take pictures of everything with your phone while you move along through the disassembly that way you can somewhat remember what goes where lol.

You actually managed to get MSI Afterburner to do anything?  Wow!

I guess it could help...

And I guess I may have won the silicon lottery with my i7-8750h...

If you have already maximized the undervolting capabilities, I would go with @imreloadin's idea.  Will take a lot of space and a lot of time (and probably some frustration), but repasting works even better than undervolting in some cases.

My undervolt increased my turbo-boosted clock speeds and performance SIGNIFICANTLY.  If the undervolt doesn't crash the computer, then it isn't hurting performance at all.

Like I said, I think I got lucky with my undervolt.  Otherwise, Coffee Lake-H (i5-8300H, i5-8400H, i7-8750H, etc.) is known for having TDP problems.  Intel set the 45W TDP too low just for marketing purposes, forcing power throttling in many cases.  Basically, the CPU is trying to exceed 45W and is told it isn't allowed to, so power throttling occurs.  (For reference, my CPU barely reaches 43W anymore, so yay -200!!!)  Try using Intel XTU to increase the maximum turbo boost wattage gradually.  See if that does anything.

It doesn't do anything other than allow the CPU to consume less power and produce less heat. All this means is it can potentially turbo boost faster or for longer on the same cooling system.

alright so thermal throttling is no longer happening but I'm still getting an average of yes on power limit throttling? any ideas on why?

Is this the GPU? Then this is normal. The GPU will run as fast as possible until one of the walls are hit:

  • Thermal: GPU temperature is too high
  • Vrel: Soft (firmware defined) voltage limit hit
  • Vmax: Hard (hardware defined) voltage limit hit
  • Power: Power limit hit.

You can use something like MSI Afterburner to increase the power limit, but keep in mind that if goes to the new power limit, it'll generate more heat and it may clock down as a result.

so what your telling me is that power limit isnt related to the cpu at all? because im using ITU and stress testing my cpu and its going from yes to no yes to no so on and so on i have eliminated thermal throttling by undervolting but i just noticed that im power throttling during a cpu stress test sorry im not very familiar with this yet i have only been increasing my knowledge the past 2 days so sorry if i sound dumb lol.

That's why I asked if it was the GPU or CPU. If it's CPU testing, then it's likely the same thing. The CPU has a power limiter in it and it won't exceed it. You can use Intel's XTU to set a new power limit, but again, if the CPU gets there it'll just output more heat and likely run into a thermal throttle condition again.

could u tell me what setting that is. and ill start testing it see if it helps or doesnt? on XTU

btw does undervolting increase performance or am i losing fps in games by doing this?

Usually performance is increased since it allows higher clock speed to be run with the same power consumption

1. Increase PL1 via XTU

2. Undervolt GPU too

3. Do a repaste (if you don't mind the hassle)

Hello evrtybody. I have the same issues with the same laptop model. I tried to change the TDP with the XTU but still having PLT. Any suggestion?

The CPU is an i7-8750H
