Hey all. I posted this comment on Linus' "I'm Going Away" stream, but I thought I'd make a forum post too just to make sure it gets seen since this is something we feel rather strongly about.

 

When you guys do your upcoming hackintosh piece, I'd actually strongly recommend against promoting Tonymacx86 as a resource like you have in the past because one of the biggest aspects to hackintoshing is the fact that it's a very legally grey area, and most people who are actually in the Hackintosh scene can't in good conscience recommend Tonymacx86. He has deliberately stolen tools and software from other Hackintosh developers and used them in his Unibeast installer tools despite those devs explicitly asking him to stop. He's also done a lot of other scummy things that most of us in the hackintosh scene do not advocate.

 

Instead, I'd ask that you guys use the Hackintosh Paradise Discord:

Just thought I'd update this post for anyone interested in MacOS and hackintoshs in general. The first thing I'd like to point out is that a lot of us feel it's kinda unethical to make a hackintosh if you don't already own a real Mac as to have a legal copy of MacOS. It also makes setting up the hackintosh infinity easier since you don't have to deal with VMs for making a boot drive, etc.

 

With that said, I like to buy my PC parts with the idea of hackintoshing in mind, but as long as you have a fairly "standard" Intel build, they're not at all difficult to get running anymore. All you need is a boot drive of MacOS, Clover, and a few very easily accessible "kernel extension" files (kexts. Essentially drivers), and you're good to go.

The hardest part of building a hackintosh isn't getting macOS running. It's editing a few parameters in the SMBIOS to support things like your GPU, USB port limits and other such hardware that differs from standard Macs.

The beauty of using a bootloader like Clover though is that once you get all that set up, you can generally just treat it like a real Mac. OS updates and stuff like that can be run, restarts and all, and it'll all function normally without anything breaking.

 

Truth be told, I've been a big advocate for gaming on MacOS over the past few years. I've found that now that a huge percentage of games on Steam and GOG now have MacOS versions, many of which are on Apple's Metal graphics API, that MacOS is actually largely on par with Windows in gaming performance. The OS is fine for gaming. The real reason Macs suck for gaming is the terrible GPUs Apple puts in them. Once MacOS has a decent GPU, the OS is very much on par with Windows when it comes to gaming.

In fact, my hackintosh has a GTX 1080, and there are actually a few CPU bound games, like World of Warcraft, that genuinely perform BETTER on MacOS than Windows because of MacOS's much better automated CPU multithreading thanks to an API called Grand Central Dispatch.

Long story short, if you haven't tried MacOS, but are hesitant to try because of Apple's ridiculous hardware, give hackintoshing a try. The OS is actually really good. And it's my person favorite OS thanks to it's UNIX-based terminal and it's great developer APIs. I personally like it's system-wide keyboard shortcuts better than Windows as well.

Yeah nah I heard it was just for a VM. You can even get pre-installed ones now, so it probably won’t be too in-depth at all.

Probably because of how much of a pain it is. Also with the swap to ARM coming again it’s days are numbered

Yeah, I've known Rampage for a while now, and can confirm Tonymacx86 has stolen from him and many other devs. The Hackintosh Paradise discord server even has a bot command with links like that to various threads clearly showing such, and why we generally don't support him.

Another big reason why we don't advocate Tonymacx86 or sites like hackintosher is because they offer altered distributions of MacOS, often with custom kernels, and no one's really sure what all has been altered, so we can't verify that those distributions are clean, even ignoring the legal implications.

 

What communities like Hackintosh Paradise and InsanelyMac encourage is that users get macOS themselves from the App Store so they KNOW it's clean, and use guides like the one I linked in the OP that teach them each step in building their own "Vanilla Install".  We enjoy teaching users what they're actually doing so they actually learn for themselves how to fix things when things *do* break. The whole teach a man to fish mentality. The community as a whole benefits a lot more when people know what their doing.
 

Plus, it's much harder to troubleshoot someone else's setup. Especially when you don't know all the details. The best person to do it is always yourself.

 

If anyone reads this post, just know that communities like Hackintosh Paradise are generally small and very tight-nit. We're something of a family. It's a great community, and I'm personally very happy to be involved in it.
