So I have an old gaming pc which I also used for taxes and homework and personal information. I want to recycle my pc but I want to get that information off first. Is there an external ssd or hdd I can put this information on and keep it there, so I can connect it to a laptop later on ?

Any large enough external had drive would do.

If you have a USB connector, I would go with a HDD since you can some that are very big and low priced. The speed is the main problem, but as a backup, you should not worry about it

If you intend to play games then go with a SSD.

Here is a version : Seagate 2T for 89.00$ us

I use WD USB drives.

They use 5400rpm hard drives.

I use https://www.amazon.com/Black-Passport-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01LQQH86A/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=wd+4tb+external+hard+drive&qid=1552480641&s=gateway&sr=8-4

If you have no USB port get a HDD docking station.

I use a Wavlink USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station.

Yes.

I use them every time I update my CPUs and motherboards. On them I have data removed from hard drives all the way back to the early 2000s.

I also use them to transfer my heavily modded games from one computer to another. Some are over 120gbs.

you do not get backup software this way, but *shrugs*.  if you know how to copy paste, there it is.

external case WITH FAN.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N1Q2M6A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

there some other variations out there but generally 27 to 40 bucks.

you can pickup a 4T HDD from 50 to 80 bucks, check https://pcpartpicker.com

  • TIP: newegg.com
    • left side menu
      • useful links (near bottom) -> warranty -> check 3 to 5 years
      • 4T or higher
      • new
    • sort by lowest to highest.
    • check a few drives, you might find some 4 maybe 5 year warranty but doubtful.

==============

WARNING! take it easy on both old hard drive and new hard drive. make sure they are kept cool if you end up tossing everything at drives at once you might cause drives to over heat. drives are good general usage, but a non stop reading/writing is stress testing them.

TIP: CUT and paste. files from old to new hard drive.

TIP: RIGHT CLICK on a folder, LEFT CLICK properties, and you can see how much all the files/folders are in size.

TIP: cut/paste less than 4 gigs at a time.  guessing around 30 minutes to an hour pending. then let drives cool down then copy/paste again.  those with fans on them tend to go longer.

==============

if you want to take external drive with you, say a laptop on the go all the time, might suggest SSD drive and exteneral drive bay. (smaller)

most external drives and cases without fans can be completely powered by usb cable and no extra power cable.

but be careful if  you start plugging in to USB HUBS that do not have a separate power plug in cord.
