2070 Bottleneck?

Hello everyone,

I'm an architecture student who happens to also really loves videogames, so the RTX 2070 has interested me since it can help with both. Also my 970 is struggling to keep up with 1440p.
However when I went to buy it the guy at the counter advised against that because it would be bottlenecked by my old hardware (mainly the DDR3 ram he said).
He seemed well intentioned enough but the cynic in me thought that he's trying to get me shill more money as part of his job.  (by basically making me upgrade the whole PC) 

So I come for your help my brethren if you'd kindly look at my current setup and tell me is a GPU upgrade likely to be bottlenecked in any significant way?

Mainly FPS games. Battlefield, Insurgency, PREY, Titanfall, METRO series.

at 1080p I can't exclude the chance of bottlenecking, but at 1440p it's not a problem. RTX 2070 do tend to be terrible value comparing to the 2060 though, costing a lot more for little performance gain.

 

Also you can still overclock the CPU for more performance.

1440p in most of these games is likely fine, but battlefield may struggle on your older CPU a little. If your performance target is 60 fps, it's not a bad combo.

A 2060 will still be a very formidable upgrade from the 970... The 2070 really is poor value but you're going 1440p144hz, Is a 1080 Ti used within what you'd pay for the top of the line 2070's?

 

There's quite some second hand deals on Vega64 cards... Considering CPU you have I'd personally settle for the RTX 2060 and adjust the in-game settings to achieve desirable framerate at 1440p, it's still a good enough card by all means.

i'd go for a 2060 and call it, 2070 may be bottlenecked and isn't worth it, 2080 will require a cpu upgrade.
